Building soil health after winter wheat with cover crops

Dodge County Farmers for Healthy Soils Healthy Waters August field day features UW Extension WiscWeeds lab’s outreach program manager Nick Arneson kicking off the morning discussing considerations for herbicide residuals for cover crops after wheat as well as managing waterhemp after taking off that wheat. Kevin Shelley of UW Madison’s Nutrient and Pest Management Program (NPM) will also present on nutrient management and species selection for those cover crops, while his colleague at NPM, Jamie Patton will jump in a soil pit to discuss cover crops’ effects on soil health. A newly installed grass waterway and equipment demonstrations will also be featured.

Moving out of drought conditions & growing conditions update

In mid-July most of the southern half of the state moved out of the abnormally dry conditions that we have seen since late spring of 2021 and amplified by this past dry winter. Illustrated in the GDD and precipitation graphs from Arlington below, even though we started off the growing season unseasonably cold and wet, we have caught up to about normal GDDs and precipitation for the south central region. UW Organic Agriculture Research Field Day

August 30, 2022, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This field day will highlight organic research conducted at UW–Madison, including optimizing equipment and production practices for organic no-till production; interseeding cover crops into corn and soybeans; the impact of organic management on soil health; and weed management for organic hemp production. Interseeding

In this, the first episode of Field Notes, we dive headlong into the practice of interseeding cover crops into standing corn, a practice becoming more and more popular in Wisconsin. To help us out, we talk with Anne Pfeiffer, program manager for UW-Madison's on-farm research research network, and Marty Weiss, a farmer in Dodge County and the vice-president of Dodge County Farmers for Healthy Soils Healthy Waters farmer-led watershed group.

Strategies to calf success in the first 24 hours of life

Calves go through 3 critical periods during their life. The first is around calving, which include the cow, calving environment and the whole area of colostrum feeding and management. The second period starts after 2 weeks of life. This period is when the most diarrhea and deaths of calves are registered and it is directly correlated with the results of the first period, meaning how good or bad the first period was. The third period is the weaning transition (2 weeks before and 2 weeks after full weaning) due to the new diet and grouping pen transition. In this occasion we are going to explain the first critical period and the strategies that you need when it comes to managing newborn calves in the first 24 hours of life.

Adult cow barn ventilation assessment workshops

At this time of the year heat stress and animal comfort is very important topic for dairy farmers. In collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Van Os from the Department of Animal and Dairy Science at UW-Madison, the Dairyland Initiative will be hosting 3 on-farm adult cow barn ventilation assessment workshops to teach participants how to measure air speeds and ventilation rates in adults cow dairy barns.Follow HERE to receive Dairy Initiative info and how to register.

ACE on the farm Twilight meetings

Attend The Agricultural Community Engagement twilight meeting to discuss ideas and solutions for issues that affect us all (Water, conservation, transportation, local ordinances and more). This event is a free, open-invitation to community members, educators, leaders, elected officials and dairy and livestock producers. Eight Wisconsin dairy farm families will be hosting this event and the tour of each dairy farm begins at 6pm, with and ice cream social served at 7 pm. The facilitated Q&A session and discussion will conclude by 8:30 pm.
