Live at the Dietrich - by Margie Young

Path Snyder and her service dog Cooper attended the Veterans Fair at the Dietrich.

The start of the blockbuster season is here with two highly anticipated movies – Disney’s Lilo and Stitch and Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning.  It doesn’t get much better than that!  Lilo and Stitch, an animated movie, is the touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps mend her broken family. The new Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise and Ethan Hunt comes to the conclusion that our lives are the sum of our choices, an action-packed thriller with a lesson for everyone. We know these films will be big hits, according to tickets already sold - a great way to start a summer when so much is happening at the Dietrich.
Our popular Pottery and Sculpture Camp for 5 to 12 year olds, the first one of the summer, is Monday, June 16 through Friday, June 20 from 4:00-5:30 p.m.  Our artist-in-residence Steve Colley will teach techniques, including coil building and slab construction, with the opportunity to throw pots on the wheel and to create sculptures.  Steve’s love of teaching this class and the enthusiasm of the kids makes us schedule two more of our Pottery and Sculpture Camps this summer: the week of July 7-11 and the week of August 4 -8 from 4:00-5:30 p.m.  Call the Dietrich at 570-836-1022 x3 to register, $65 for each camp series.
A unique first-time opportunity for those 18 and up is Broadway Style Jazz Dance with Jessica Cadden Osborne, Thursdays, May 29 through June 26 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. All levels are invited and I am told that if you need a chair for balance, one will be available. All sessions will begin with warm-up exercises, then move to musicality, coordination, and Broadway Style Jazz Dance technique.  We are pleased to announce that the class is free, because it is sponsored by the NEIU19, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Armature.  Thanks, Annette Sheldon, for telling us about this very special class.  To register please call the number above.
The summer brochures of classes and events will soon be available at the Dietrich and online. If you need to have one mailed to you, just let us know. It is a summer filled with camps for the kids, Open Mic, River Day, Founders Day, Shakespeare in the Park, and so much more.
The Post Festival Film Discussion is always fun with Ronnie Harvey’s ability to get us all thinking and talking about the foreign and independent films we had just seen, a perfect way to end each festival.  And this last discussion was no exception.  Glenda always treats us to Krispy Kreme doughnuts, adding to the fun of the afternoon.  Ronnie told us that the anchor films of the Spring Fest were Penguin Lessons, No Other Land, and The Friend.  They attracted the best audiences.  But so many films required discussion to try to figure out the intent and meaning, including Mulholland Drive and Black Bag. And many of us are glad to know that we do not have a long wait until Summer Fest.  Can you believe that Preview Day is Thursday, June 26 at 1:00 and 6:00 p.m.?  Summer Fest begins on Friday, July 11.
I was able to stop by our Veterans Fair last weekend and Larry White, our Veterans Connecting: Meetup & Workshop facilitator, introduced me to one veteran, Path Snyder, who was there with her service dog Cooper. She told me that it was at a Veterans Fair that she found out that she could get a service dog to help her deal with her PTSD. That’s what Veterans Fairs are all about.  Mary Turner and Erica Rogler both said they were thanked for bringing so many service groups together. Thank you Coterra Energy and  Larry White, for your dedication to make this a special yearly event.
If you can, come to Open Mic Friday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. in our Fassett Studio to hear readings from our own Veterans Meetup group. Hear their stories. Come to honor them -  a perfect way to feel the meaning of Memorial Day.
