Recently, JHU launched a new team to manage tuition payment processing and third party payers. There are two important changes we wanted our families to be aware of:
  1. Students who have third party payers—outside organizations paying all or part of their tuition—must now go into SIS Self Service > Billing > Third Party Billing to upload documents and complete a very brief acknowledgement form. This includes students who receive VA education benefits, but does not apply to federal financial aid/grants such as Pell grants.
  2. Any tuition payments submitted by mail should now be sent to:

    TPP Team
    Johns Hopkins University
    Garland Hall, B33
    3400 N. Charles Street
    Baltimore, MD 21218

Room selection for next year

If your student is currently a first-year student, they will begin the exciting Room Selection Process when they return to campus for the spring semester. The Room Selection Process (RSP) is the process in which first-year students select their housing for their sophomore year on campus. The Housing Office will be sending out more communications to families in a few weeks with additional information and important dates. If you’d like to learn more now, please see this newsletter, which was sent to all first-year students in December. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to reach out directly to the Housing office at 410-516-7960 or housing@jhu.edu.

Memorial service for Coach Margraff

As we shared on the Blue Jay Families facebook, our Blue Jay Family community lost a tremendous person earlier this month, our beloved football coach, Jim Margraff. Link to story on his passing
An on-campus Memorial Service for late Coach Margraff will be held on Saturday January, 26, 2019. Click here for directions to the service.

Blue Jay Family feature: Meet the Opoku-Achampongs

Distance can be intimidating for many first-time college students and their families. For Kwabena and Eva Opoku-Achampong, their son Nigel’s decision to turn down offers from Ivy League schools in their home state of Massachusetts in order to attend Johns Hopkins took some getting used to. “Nigel was initially attracted to Hopkins because of Johns Hopkins’ academic excellence,” Kwabena says, “particularly the medical school’s being one of the best in the nation.”
Complicating matters further was the fact that, while the Opoku-Achampongs were able to visit the other colleges Nigel was considering, they didn’t have the opportunity to make a trip to Maryland before the acceptance deadline. “We finally agreed to pray over the decision,” Kwabena says, and ultimately, the family took a chance on Hopkins.

Connections, internships and funding for all students

There are plenty of opportunities for your student to learn more about themselves and their passions during spring. The semester starts with Internship Week, which gives students opportunities to meet companies and find funding for positions, and multiple other industry-specific events. First-year students can also attend One-Stop Success Shop (Feb. 11) and a final Launch session in February.
Other events and opportunities will be listed on jhu.joinhandshake.com. Encourage your student to stop in and look!

Learn more about Fraternity and Sorority Life

The Johns Hopkins University Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) and the Office of the Dean of Student Life recognize and value the benefits of undergraduate Greek letter organizations. Close friendships, mentoring relationships, leadership opportunities, community service and philanthropy programs, alumni engagement, and an emphasis on campus involvement are hallmarks of the fraternity and sorority experience at Johns Hopkins.

Residential Life opportunities still available

The Offices of Student Financial Services and Residential Life have recently released the details and FAQs around a new compensation plan as it relates to being employed as a Resident Advisor on campus. Starting with the cohort hired for 2019-2020, all students who accept offers to become Resident Advisors will receive a stipend in addition to housing and a meal plan. There are additional aspects of this compensation plan to consider if you are a student who receives financial aid. Review the compensation plan and access the Resident Advisor application on the department website.
The deadline for RA applications is January 9, 2019 by 11:59 p.m. and with the new compensation plan, the office is confident that there will be a strong candidate pool that will represent the diverse makeup of our student body. This change in approach is a competitive one and we are proud to say, puts JHU ahead of our peers in this category. The RA position is one of vital responsibility on our campus, providing them growth and development for as student employees and the opportunity to serve their peers in a leadership and mentorship capacity.

Blue Jay Athletics enjoys record-setting fall

For the second consecutive year, Johns Hopkins sits atop the final Learfield Directors’ Cup standings at the end of the fall season. The Directors’ Cup is a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Through the course of the year, points are awarded based on a school’s finish in up to 18 sports—nine men and nine women—in NCAA Championships. With seven teams qualifying for NCAA Championship competition, Johns Hopkins totaled 475 points to claim the top spot in the final fall standings, which were announced on December 20, 2018. Winter weather safety tips

Winter can bring anything from icy rain to several feet of snow to Baltimore. Help your student be ready for the weather by sharing these seasonal tips from Campus Safety and Security.
  • Wear appropriate layers of clothing and footwear for the conditions. Be ready to head out to class when conditions are less than perfect. Johns Hopkins remains on a normal operating schedule whenever possible to minimize interruption to teaching and research and because so many university employees and students are involved in patient care. So have a warm jacket, hat, gloves, scarf, and boots handy.
  • Build in extra travel time. In the case of severe weather conditions, Blue Jay Shuttle service may be temporarily suspended, but it will resume normal scheduling as soon as possible. Notifications will be kept up to date on various sites including the TransLoc website, Transportation Services website and Transportation Facebook page.

Parents Programs and Giving news

Many thanks to all who participated, volunteered, and cheered-on the Parents Fund during the #GIVETUEHOPKINS campaign, November 27, 2018. We are grateful to all the parents, alumni, staff, friends and current students who made this monumental day of giving a huge success.
