March is Sleep Awareness Month |
March is National Sleep Awareness Month, and it is a good reminder to talk about the importance of sleep and its impact on our overall health. Getting adequate sleep helps you get sick less often, stay healthy, reduce stress, improve your mood, improve your attention, and lower your risk of chronic conditions like Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Adults should get 7–9 hours of sleep per night.
Some tips to help get a good night's sleep are:
|
- Go to bed and get up at the same time every day.
- Keep your bedroom at a cool temperature.
- Turn off all electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
-
Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet.
- Avoid caffeine in the afternoon or evening.
- Try relaxing activities such as journaling or reading before bedtime.
|
Talk to your healthcare provider if you have any concerns or questions about your sleep. Sweet dreams!

March is Self-Harm Awareness Month |
Expressing feelings and managing life can be difficult at any age, and finding healthy ways to cope takes strength and support. Self-injury is a deliberate, non-suicidal behavior that inflicts physical harm on one's body to relieve emotional distress. The clinical term for this behavior is called Non-Suicidal Self Injury (NSSI).
NSSI can take many forms, including cutting, picking, burning, bruising, puncturing, and embedding. Generally, it is a deliberate, private act that is habitual in occurrence, not an attention-seeking behavior, nor meant to be manipulative.
Tips for Reducing Self-Injury:
|
-
Change your surroundings, go outside, move around, stretch, or dance.
- Cry, yell, sing, or scream (in a safe environment). Put a voice to those feelings rather than a scar.
- Do household chores such as washing dishes, cleaning your room, and any activity to release emotions. Often, the activity can interrupt the trance-like state that frequently comes with self-harm, shifting you towards more positive behaviors.
- Hug or hold something that you like. It can help you feel grounded.
- Call or text a trusted person. Call the warm line 855-600-WARM.
- Reroute self-harm by using less severe forms of sensations, holding an ice cube, tearing or shredding paper or a sheet, snapping a rubber band against your skin, or sucking a lemon peel.
-
Seeking professional support is a great option. The IVC Health and Wellness Center is here to support you through this time. We encourage you to schedule an appointment with us.
