Job 1:1
In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.
New International Version (NIV)
Do you believe in Karma?  As I understand it the theory is, “You will get what you deserve.”  If you do good then good will happen to you; or if you do bad, bad will come to you.  Do people ultimately get what they deserve?

For example, what did Job do to lose his family, his possessions and his health?  He was a man of complete integrity who feared God and turned from evil.   Then he lost it all.  Someone will protest, “But he got it all back in the end.”  He received more possessions and more children.  But not the first children.  Not in this lifetime.

Our righteousness does not exempt us from pain.  In a broken world, we are subject to frightening forces and floods and fire.  In this time of enormous pain, when friends fail to bring comfort, God is watching and working.  Paul explained to the church in Rome, “And we know that in all things God is working for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purposes” (Romans 8:28).

Life is not about getting what we deserve.  Instead of Karma, Christians affirm God’s grace.  God gives us his unmerited favor.  Salvation is not repayment for our good, but reconciliation with God.  Jesus took on pain he did not deserve and sacrificed his life to restore our relationship with God, so that we would not get what we deserve.

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for grace.  Help us to live lives of integrity so that we may be ready for whatever comes our way today.  Continue to heal our hearts from pains of the past.  We wait in hope for you.  You are our only hope.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
