Acts 19: 23 - 27
23 About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. 24 A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. 25 He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business. 26 And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all. 27 There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty."

New International Version (NIV)
What difference are we Christians making in the world? Jesus called his followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Whatever else salt and light have in common, they both change their surroundings. So did the first believers.

Luke tells us that Paul's preaching about Jesus disrupted and devalued the idol trade in Ephesus by lowering the demand. Demetrius, a silversmith who made money selling idols, saw the effect of Christianity on his bottom line. Not only was he losing sales but Artemis, the patron goddess was losing face.

In a provocative book, Larry Hurtado called Christians "destroyers of the gods." As Christ's renown grew in ancient cultures, the need for idols went away. The gospel still works. As God transforms us through the message about Jesus, we can become agents of change in the world, like salt and light. So, shake and shine! Let the world see your good deeds and glorify our Father.

Pray with me:
Gracious Father, as you revive us, please restore our distinctiveness as your people. Forgive us for losing our flavor and hiding our light. Make us so different that we make a difference. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen!
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
