2 Kings 2:11-14
As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.   Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two.  Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.   He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.
New International Version (NIV)
God specializes in high water crossings!  We read about the Red Sea and Joshua parting the Jordan.  As Elijah prepared to leave this world he parted the Jordan River, too.  Then he looked at his protégé Elisha and asked, “What can I do for you?’  “I would like to be you times two!” came the answer from Elisha.  To paraphrase Elijah, “That will be hard, but if you are with me when I go, you will receive a double portion of my spirit.”

Have you been blessed to have a great mentor?   We not only want to learn from them but to be like them and to do what they do.  I have been blessed by several pastors and other ministers who took time to pray with me.  In recent years, God has called many of them home.  Someone asked, “So who is next?”  Perhaps at some point, we become the mentor and not the protégé.

Elijah told Elisha he did not have to join him on his final journey.  Nevertheless, Elisha determined to stay close.  When Elijah was taken away in a whirlwind, Elisha picked up Elijah’s mantle, hit the water and asked, “Where now is the God of Elijah?”  By parting the waters, God said, “I am right here.”  So if you find yourself in an impossible spot today, God is as near as a prayer.  The same God who led Moses, Joshua, Elijah, Elisha and all of your Christian mentors is leading you right now.

 Pray with me:
Father, thank you for Christian heroes and mentors who walked closely with you.  We admire your work in their lives.  Today we ask you to do for us what you did for them:  empower us to do exceeding abundantly more for your kingdom.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
