My husband and I were recently discussing the attributes of social media. Coming from a marketing background, I feel that it’s a wonderful tool for self-promotion. He maintains that, with the exception of keeping in touch with distant family and former classmates, it’s Satan’s spawn. After making our respective points, we simultaneously said, “But you’ll never get that genie back into its bottle.”
I repeated what I always say whenever we utter the same exact statement in unison, “Two heads, one brain.” It caused me to think, “Were we really that similar on our wedding day or has the culmination of over two decades together somehow morphed our individual perspectives?” I remember my father telling me as a teenager, “When you look for a life partner make sure that you find someone with whom you can share an interesting conversation as you sit in rocking chairs on your porch in your old age. Looks will fade, passion will subside, but the ability to share a stimulating conversation will last a lifetime.”
As I reflect on my marriage during this season of love, I can’t help but think how right he was. I could probably fit my right thigh into my wedding gown today, and God love him, with every wedding invitation we receive, I know that he’ll give it the old college try to squeeze into that suit that he probably bought when he was in college. My hair requires frequent touch-ups now while his has long since left the proverbial building. But what remains is a partner who has shared my highest highs and lowest lows. Someone who knew my grandmothers, my pregnancy cravings, and my first apartment. And someone without whom I would not have three of the greatest loves of my life; my children.
While there’s an excitement like no other at the start of a new relationship, there’s much to be said for having a love to grow old with. And besides…why would I ever need to fit into that wedding gown again anyway?
