Dear Parents, Grandparents, and other Caregivers of Young Ones,

I want to let you know about a special small group forming next month. I hope you will consider attending! Read on for how you can get an extra boost of support for the important work you do:

UU Parenting Support Group
6:00 to 7:30 pm on the first Monday of the month, starting October 7th

People who are parenting or preparing to serving in a parental role, and/or taking care of children as a guardian, grandparent, etc. don’t always get the support they need. Do you long for time to debrief the joys and woes of life with littles? Do you wonder how to manage the day-to-day responsibilities of children? Do you wish for space to talk to other parents about parenting? If so, this is your group! Led by Fellowship members with professional expertise Erin VandenLangenberg and Katie Demerath-Cook, this peer support opportunity is a wonderful way to get help with all aspects of parenting, including learning how to support kids without ignoring one’s own needs, accessing community resources when necessary, and talking to kids about social development, spirituality, behavior choices, and more. Childcare is available for those who RSVP at least 24 hours in advance. Sign up for childcare HERE or at the Sign Up Spot at the Fellowship.

If you’d ever like to connect about parenting or anything else, I can always be reached at leah@fvuuf.org.

Love, Rev. Leah

Confession of Good Deeds by Rev. Christina Leone-Tracy
We might be familiar with the practice of confession-- in which one's transgressions or sins are confessed to a cleric. But what if we practiced confessing good deeds? What joy might we find within ourselves and
others? What healing might take place?

The Fragile Sequence by Rev. Leah Hart-Landsberg
In Judaism, the High Holy Days are an annual reminder to ‘fess up to our mistakes. But actually apologizing can make us very vulnerable. What is so important about the act of saying “I’m sorry?” And what comes next in the fragile sequence of recognizing that we are imperfect beings? Led by lifelong Jewish Unitarian Universalists Rev. Leah and Fellowship member Jaclyn Kottman, this service is for those from Jewish backgrounds and non-Jews alike and will include very special music by our own Mark Urness and Dan Van Sickle.
At last weekend’s services, we collected $664.57 for Fox Valley Voices of Men. If you missed the opportunity to contribute please drop off or mail a check payable to Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship with Fox Valley Voices of Men noted in the memo field, no later than Friday October 4, 2019. Your contribution will help support the work of the Fox Valley Voices of Men. Thank you for your support!

Upcoming Programs
Men’s Group TED Talk Presentation and Discussion
September 29, 12:15 – 2pm (don't worry, there's not a Packer game that day)
The Fellowship Men’s Group invites those identifying as male, including high school aged youth who are accompanied by an adult male family member, to attend and participate. We will start by watching TED talks about men’s roles, identities, and relationships, followed by a discussion about those themes. The TED talks focus on how men have been raised to be strong, unemotional, and dominant in their relationships with women and avoidant of vulnerability. The educators note that while men have many positive qualities, they challenge us to examine the unhealthy aspects of a traditional male role. Light snacks will be provided. Men’s Group members will facilitate the discussion.

Connect @ Home!    …A new Fellowship offering to stay connected

One of our biggest challenges is to provide meaningful ways for you to connect to this Fellowship, to each other, and to the topics we explore. That is particularly hard given the reality of busy schedules, worry about nighttime or winter driving, or needing to get a babysitter. This year we’re offering a way to Connect @ Home! Notice the “@” symbol? It will be a primarily online connection, allowing you the option of connecting from the comfort of home, with a warm drink and your slippers on!
These offerings will take place once during each theme series this year—watch the Scroll for details on upcoming Connect @ Home sessions. The focus of each session will be to discuss the impact of the theme that we’ve been in for a while, and prepare for the theme that will be coming next. We’ll begin with a chalice lighting and reading, and then have some open-ended thought questions to prompt deeper conversation. These sessions will last one hour.
Each time, there will be two chances to connect—once at noon with an option to come to the Fellowship in person or join online (maybe on your lunch break at work), or that same evening at 7:30pm online only (after the kids are in bed, or dinner is done). The online portion will be a simple Zoom link – To do that, click on the link and you will be prompted to download the software. You may also wish to create an account, but that is not required to participate in a Zoom meeting. You will need a computer or device with a webcam and microphone to participate in a Zoom session.

Fall Art Theme
The theme for our next art show will be “The Healing Power of Art.” Anyone who has a piece of art that they find healing either by having created it or by the simple act of enjoying it is invited to share it with the Fellowship for a few months. It need not be your original art, but anything that you have found that brings peace to your soul. It needs to be framed and ready to hang on the wall.  We don’t have spaces for objects. The art committee will be hanging the display on September 30th. Please make sure your pieces are labeled on the back with the title and the owner’s name and are delivered to the Fellowship by noon that day. If you need to bring them in beforehand, please contact Cyndi in the office at cyndi@fvuuf.org. Anyone who currently has art on display is asked to remove it at that time. Also, if you are interested in being a part of the art committee, please contact Mary Gerlach gerlachmz@new.rr.com. We can always use more help hanging the shows and expanding the roll of art at the Fellowship.

Wellspring Wednesday
October 9, 6:30 pm
Pantheism with Fellowship member Dave Gerlach
Unitarian Universalists tend to be keenly interested in different spiritual paths.  We often teach our children in religious education about the different world religions.  Plus, we often hear our ministers deliver sermons about those religions over the years.  One religion/spirituality that isn’t talked about as much is Pantheism.  It is a life-affirming, nature-based religion that could hold a lot of promise for us as UU's and for the world at large.  At this program, we'll be treated to a look at this religion from the point of view of a proponent who has come to truly appreciate its appeal. Dave Gerlach is a member of our Fellowship and has spoken about this topic to our Fellowship in prior years.
Sign up for childcare online HERE or at the Sign Up Spot at the Fellowship. We need at least one child signed up 24 hours in advance in order to have childcare.
Gun Responsibility Forums
A public conversation about gun responsibility: Each fall, The New Voices Choir uses music to frame discussions about important social issues. They present a live choral concert in conjunction with a series of public discussions about an issue facing our community. This year we tackle the topic of gun violence in our society--what some have called an American epidemic. Their concert on October 26 will feature music inspired by recent tragedies, but prior to the concert we will feature two public forums.

Public Forums: Both held at the Fellowship
October 10, 7:00 pm featuring Nancy Jones from the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort (WAVE)
October. 15, 7:00 pm featuring expert panel discussion with representatives from the Appleton Police Department, WAVE and others.
Greater Good Save the Date!
Presentations - November 3 and Voting - November 10
We will be hearing presentations for American Friends Service Committee, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, and BABES, Inc. Because of our fifth principle (the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large), it is important for all of our children to take part in this process. If your child cannot attend during the presentations or voting, please let us know and we will arrange for an absentee ballot!
