Live at the Dietrich - by Margie Young

Master falconer Bob Astegher and his hunting companion Rita, a red-tailed hawk.

“After you trap your bird, a falconer needs to sit with the falcon, red-tailed hawk or another bird of prey, in a darkened room – just sit with the bird and give it food.  When she takes food from your glove, try to get her to jump to your glove from a chair,” relates Bob Astegher. There are only 200 falconers in Pennsylvania and only 2,500 falconers in the United States, and one of them lives in our area. More than 80 folks came to his presentation last Saturday to learn about the art of falconry. Bob says he only wants to share the wonder of falconry, and he is not trying to get everyone to practice it.  He adds, “It is a way of life,” requiring time and dedication.
When he took his red-tailed hawk out of the box, the audience was mesmerized. It is always a special experience to get closer to a wild creature. Bob trapped her in October and she already is hunting small game with Bob and we learned that she is able to kill mice, rats and chipmunks morsels that then become her dinner. Bob always releases his bird at the end of the season, sending it off to its natural life. Thank you, Bob, for sharing with us the wonder of the art and sport of falconry.
Last Sunday twins Maddie and Liz Adams, students at Marywood University, were here to encourage us to be kind and how to practice kindness. Sponsored by the Tunkhannock Business and Professional Women and Marywood University, they know all about the need for kindness, because Liz has a facial deformity.  Together she and Maddie have a website at www.courageouslykind.org where you can find ways to bring Kindness Week and many other activities to schools or other groups. Our world around us can be so cruel sometimes, and we need constant reminders to just be kind. Each of us was given a special pin and another item to remember to be kind. Thank you to all who made this special event possible.
Coming up is a free Film Favorite showing of the movie Glory on February 23 at 2:00 p.m. This showing is sponsored by the Ezra Griffin Grand Army of the Republic Museum in Scranton’s Steamtown Mall. The Civil War movie stars Denzel Washington who won an Academy Award for his performance.  And there is a local connection, as the 52nd PA regiment, known as the Luzerne Regiment, served nearby the 54th regiment which is featured in the movie.  The Luzern Regiment was the first federal unit to reclaim Fort Sumter, 160 years ago. You are invited to an afternoon of national and local history. Get your free tickets at the ticket booth or reserve them by calling the Dietrich at 570-836-1022 x3.
Another reminder to join the interactive Oscars History: Exploring Nearly 100 Years of Cinema and Academy History on Saturday, March 1 at 10:30 a.m.  John Tindell, Professor of Communication Studies at Northampton Community College invites you to join us for a morning of stories, trivia, and discussion that will give you a better understanding of one of the biggest nights in movie history – the Academy Awards.
Breaking news is that on Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. the classic black and white film noir from 1945 called Detour will be on the Dietrich screen, sponsored by The Knee Center and Dr. David Cooper. Detour tells the story of a down and out piano player who decides to hitchhike away from New York City to join his girlfriend in California, an Academy Award winning film that is one you will never forget. This incredible film that might have been on the Dietrich screen in 1945 is free and you are invited.
I am so excited about Winter Fest beginning on Friday, 21 foreign and independent films in 21 days. My daughter will be flying in from Chicago to experience our film festival.  This one begins with a showing of Conclave on this very Friday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m. Then I will let her choose movies that she wants to see before she departs on Monday. We are so proud that we can screen more than 80 foreign and independent films every year. Pick up your brochure or go to our new website at www.dietrichtheater.com.
Discover and explore with us. There is so much to learn and entertain you at this little corner of historic Tunkhannock. You are invited.
