This week, we light two candles of the Advent wreath each day—one for hope, which grows beyond wishful thinking to a confident trust in God’s promise, and one for peace, which is not silence, but a sense of security trusting that we are never alone.
Reflecting on today’s Gospel, we uncover a powerful image for our Advent journey through the Parable of the Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:12-14).
In one moment, the sheep is overcome with excitement and drawn to something away from the shepherd and the 99 other sheep. In the next moment, it is caught in the thicket, trembling, and aware that it is alone. With each passing moment, its fear grows, and its despair deepens. The sounds of rustling branches draw nearer, and a shadow envelops it. Then the sheep hears the shepherd's voice, calling out its name. Panic is replaced by peace. The sheep is rescued and carried back to the flock on the shepherd’s shoulders.
We are like that lost lamb, continually loved and drawn back into the flock. Advent is an invitation to let ourselves be found. It’s a moment to pause in gratitude and look up in reverence, not because we’ve reached a destination, but because our Good Shepherd came to lead us home. The allegory of the sheep is the essence of Advent hope and peace that He is coming to rescue us and redirect our journey so that we remain with Him.
Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, whose life radiated both hope and peace, reminds us always to remain spiritually alert: “The interest of the heavenly and everlasting kingdom in the true spirit of faith and hope should always be in our minds.”
Mother Seton, who overcame many distractions and entanglements, encourages us to be intentional in cultivating hope and faith in all we do. Her life of commitment continues to inspire greater purpose, leading us to place our trust in Christ the Good Shepherd.
Lord, open our hearts to being found this Advent season. Guide us on our journey and help us listen attentively to the Shepherd’s voice. May hope arise from our struggles, and may peace surround us as we walk with grace toward the One who never ceases to seek us.
