LSU GeauxScience

Spotlight: LSU Geaux Science Explorations

Geaux Science Explorations is a LSU College of Science outreach initiative that seeks to inspire young minds to understand, value, and pursue science. The programs support student engagement in science by prioritizing experiences with LSU scientists, hands-on activities, diversity, and early exposure to science fields.
STEM Story Time - Stories read by LSU scientists in public libraries followed by hands-on activities. One virtual version featured LSU scientist, Dr. Jeremy Brown who read “Lots: The Diversity of Life on Earth” by Nicola Davies and answered questions about his field. The program also featured author Shelli R. Johannes' book “Libby Loves Science.” Prior to the event, 70 participants were mailed an activity kit with all supplies needed for the hands-on portion - led by LSU chemistry alumna, Dr. Alecia Gabriel [featured above].
Girls’ Day at the Museum - An annual event where girls spend a day exploring the reptiles, birds, fish, mammals, and other collections in the internationally recognized LSU Museum of Natural Science (MNS) and lunch and chat with LSU’s top women scientists. This event also pivoted delivering a unique field trip, led by LSU MNS staff and alumni, included virtual  exploration of mammals, birds, and fish at the LSU MNS, the Florida Museum of Natural History, and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Girls also participated in virtual chats with LSU women scientists and received an activity kit with everything they needed to participate in a guided hands-on learning experience.
