1 Samuel 16:7-13

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

Who really knows you? So often we get our sense of self from what others say about us. Imagine David keeping the sheep for his dad when Samuel came to town to anoint a new king. His dad didn’t even bring him in from the field for the audition. His oldest brother stepped straight out of central casting. Even Samuel was fooled by his appearance. But God was not.

Like Samuel, we may be easily fooled by outward appearance. God alone looks on the heart. David wasn’t his own father’s first pick to become king. But he was the heavenly Father’s first pick.

If nobody else does, God knows you. He sees you. The God who sees you will find you and put you where he wants you to be. Like Samuel, we sometimes get a front-row seat to see what God does in the life of another person. When he poured the oil on David’s head, God came powerfully upon David. God was for him. Who could be against him? God is for us. Who can be against us?

Pray with me:

Father, thank you for seeing us as we are. Help us to see ourselves as you do. Then give us eyes to look beyond the external to see the potential in every person. Rest powerfully upon us today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
