John 8:31-32
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
New International Version (NIV)
Who tells you the truth?  “Honesty is such a lonely word.  Everyone is so untrue...”  Remember the smoky tones of Billy Joel crooning those words.  In a book called The Day America Told the Truth, the writer revealed a survey in which Americans admitted to lying every day.  To quote an aphorism and a recent song, “People can tell we are lying because our lips are moving.”
Do you have anyone who will tell you the truth?  Thinking?  You do!  God loves us so much that he always tells us the truth.  Truth is more than just an impersonal principle.  Jesus Christ embodies the truth.
The truth is not bad news.  Here is the truth:  we are worse off than we thought, but more loved than we ever knew.  This is really good news.  We know our lives are broken.  Thankfully our God loves us so much that he will not let us go.  If we live in the truth of God’s love, we will be free to tell the truth and live the truth.  No wonder Jesus started so many of his teachings with “Truly, truly I say to you . . .”  His lips are moving.  Are we listening?
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for the Truth we have found in Jesus.  Help us to trust your truth so strongly that we tell each other the truth, in love.  In the name of the Truth, Jesus we pray.  Amen.
