What should we do today? Whatever God tells us to do. But how will God speak? Most often through his word. As we read the scriptures in community, God reveals everything we need to know. One of my friends said to me, “Pay attention to your dreams. Sometimes God speaks through dreams.”
Jacob, whose story is part of the Bible, did not have a Bible. Not even a scroll. The law had not yet been given. God spoke to Jacob through a dream. What did he say? “I am the God who met you at Bethel.” God had always had Jacob in his hands and he was not going to let him go.Then God commanded him to leave immediately and return home.
How did Rachel and Leah feel about leaving their dad and their family? They knew their dad well. They were ready to go. Their response to Jacob guides our thoughts: “Do whatever God has told you.” This is always good advice. What should we do today? Whatever God has told us to do. God speaks through his word, his people, and sometimes through dreams. But the dreams will never contradict God’s revealed will in his word.
