Revelation 21:6-7
He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.   Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.
New International Version (NIV)
How will we know that God’s work is completely finished?  On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished.”  On the throne he says to John, “It is done.”  Jesus started the world as the agent of creation who made all things.  He will be the last one standing at the finish, when sin and death are finally defeated.
Can you believe that the water which will finally quench the thirst of our souls costs us nothing?  We routinely buy water to quench our physical thirst, but in heaven the water is free and living water.  Jesus stood at the great feast and asked, “Is anyone thirsty?”  Then he said, “Come to me and drink . . .”  Jesus is the one we have thirsted for our whole lives.  In heaven we will see him face to face and finally our thirst will be quenched..
Championship sports teams often have a theme song to convey the victory.  “We are the champions of the world . . .” rings in the ears of the admiring and appreciative fans.   Jesus speaks about heaven as the final victory.  His victory over death and sin becomes our victory.  By his grace we inherit heaven and we will live as his children forever.  As C. S. Lewis portrayed in the end of his Chronicles of Narnia, then we will realize that everything that has ever happened to that point is just the prologue of the story and the real story of our lives will begin . . . and never ever end.
Pray with me:
Father, we praise you as the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last.  Help us to hunger and thirst for your righteousness until the day that you finally fill our hearts and satisfy the longing of our souls.  When our souls get weary, remind us of our rich inheritance in Christ.  Prepare us as your holy bride for the great wedding of the ages.  Lead us to live today in ways that will make us ready for that great day.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
Thank you for reading again this year.  In 2018, we will focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  I can’t wait!  See you next year.
Joyfully,
Duane
