Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
New International Version (NIV)
How is your self-improvement project going?  Each of us has one.  We know we need to work on this matter of our health, or that matter of our temper, or overcoming our anxiety.  All of these things are important parts of our growth as human beings.  Sometimes though, someone will say to me, “I can’t become a Christian yet because I need to work on this area or that area of my life.”  Then I remember this verse.
God’s love for us has never been conditional.  Jesus did not die for the exceptional people, nor did he wait for us to “clean up our act.”  While we were sinners, enemies of God and powerless to change ourselves, as Paul describes us in the preceding verses, Christ died for us.  God was at his best when we were at our worst.
Why would God allow his only Son to die for us?  Because God loves us, really loves us.  He doesn’t love us “if. . .” or “because . . .” but God loves us “no matter what.”  We do not need to wait to become followers of Christ.  We come as we are and God makes us who he always knew we could be.  Trust God and see!
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for unconditional love.  We know we do not deserve your grace to us, but we pray that you would help us to believe it today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
I want to invite you to join me in memorizing 52 passages this year from the 2017 set of Fighter Verses.  You can find the Fighter Verses App at the App Store on your phones or via this link  http://fighterverses.com/the-verses/fighter-verses/As we study the Bible this year, let's look at each text and learn what it says about God.
