Civic Leadership Academy celebrates inaugural class
This week, the first 28 Civic Leadership Academy Fellows began their rigorous six-month leadership development program, which will provide them with essential skills and the time and space to collaborate on capstone projects that address actual challenges facing their organizations.

As Steve Koch, deputy mayor of the City of Chicago, said at our event introducing the first class, “It’s one of those ideas that hits you, and you say, ‘How have we gotten along without that? Why has no one done this to date? And, this is fabulous.’ This is just unremittingly good.” Read more

Cornel West to speak at Rockefeller Chapel on Feb. 1 

Dr. West will deliver the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture Annual Public Lecture this Sunday, Feb. 1. The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Office of Civic Engagement's UChicago Engages series. UCSC Day of Service
University celebrates diversity leadership
As part of its 2015 MLK Day celebration, on Jan. 15, 2015, University President Robert Zimmer honored Cathy Cohen, Timuel Black, and Veronica Hauad for their contributions to fostering diversity, advancing social justice, and promoting equality. Partner Spotlight: Susana Vasquez
Vasquez works to improve neighborhoods throughout metropolitan Chicago, with loans, grants, and technical assistance. Vasquez joined LISC in 2003 as a program officer and soon became director of the office's most ambitious effort, the New Communities Program, a 10-year initiative to support comprehensive community development across 16 neighborhoods. Today, she oversees 15 staff, a $9 million program budget, and $14 million loan portfolio. Vasquez's insight helped to shape how the Civic Leadership Academy meets nonprofit needs.
