Does milk fat depression make you feel lost? Here is how to troubleshoot it. |
Regional Dairy - Manuel Peña
Milk fat depression is commonly defined as a reduction in milk fat yield with no change in the yield of milk or other milk components. Managing risk factors associated with MFD is essential, but their presence does not necessarily mean a herd will experience the condition. When milk fat depression (MFD) occurs, it can leave dairy producers questioning where to begin troubleshooting.

FoodWIse - Kimberly Lafler
Sharing a meal is one of the best ways to build connections and create lasting memories and lifelong healthy eating habits! Here are some mealtime ideas to try:
|
- Turn off the TV and ask that phones be ‘parked’ in a spot away from the table.
- Have everyone share what they did during the day, what made you laugh? What was fun?
- Try new foods at home. Many chances of trying a new food are needed to like them.
- Talk about the color, feel and flavor of the foods. This can make it more appealing to those who may be picky.
- Let everyone help with getting the meal ready.
- Serve a variety of foods from each food group.
- Be a food critic - have each family member rate the visual appeal, smell, taste and texture of the meal on a 1-5 scale. Decide together if you’d like to serve it again.
- On a nice day, try a change of scenery, go for a picnic or take the meal to the backyard.

The Wisconsin 4-H Space Camp Experience |
Positive Youth Development - Marie Witzel
Wisconsin 4-H Space Camp is an educational experience where youth from across the state take a bus down to Huntsville, Alabama, for a 4 day journey. Youth get the opportunity to venture away from home to meet new friends, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and learn all about space. They are led by a team of trained Adult Advisors. As a 4-H program, our goals for youth who go through Space Camp are:
|
-
To have the opportunity to learn in an exciting environment away from school.
- To develop social skills by meeting new people and working as a team.
- To have the opportunity to learn life skills in a situation that is unfamiliar to them.
- To have the opportunity to develop leadership skills.

Women Farmers Impact Local Communities |
Community Development – Patricia Malone
A recent research project by Steven Deller, University of Wisconsin-Madison professor, has found that communities with more women-owned or -operated farms have higher rates of business creation, lower poverty rates and a longer average life expectancy. Deller and his colleagues assert that “the reduction in rural poverty is particularly important.”
Billions of federal dollars have been spent on rural poverty reduction. Any efforts that reduce rural poverty should be more closely examined.
Women’s role in agriculture is significant as the number of farms owned or operated by women increase. While more men are leaving agriculture, more women are entering agriculture according to the USDA.
The research also showed that women approach agriculture and other businesses differently. They look at the bigger picture. Women entrepreneurs think beyond maximizing profit.
