2 Samuel 12:7-10

7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. 9 Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’

New International Version (NIV)

"Oh what a tangled web we weave . . . when first we practice to deceive." Sir Walter Scott was right when he wrote those words. When David stole Uriah's wife and then had Uriah killed, he might have thought nobody would ever find out. The tangled web of his sin was steeped in deception.

Nathan gave David the gift of accountability. He told a story of a rich man who stole a poor man's only sheep. When David expressed his judgment on the guilty person, Nathan told him, "You are the man." Then God pronounced judgment on David's sin through the prophet Nathan.

David's sin was well-known to God. So is ours. Later David would describe his pain in Psalm 32. When he tried to conceal his sin, his bones ached. But when he confessed his sin, he found forgiveness (Psalm 32:3-5).

It's true. As Abraham Lincoln said, "You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time." But we can never fool God at all. The same God who forgave David will surely forgive us if we turn from our sin to him.

Pray with me:

Father, you desire truth from our hearts. Today we choose to tell you the truth and to live the truth. As we turn from our sin, change our hearts. Train us to live in righteousness we pray. Make us the kinds of people who easily and willingly obey you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
