Job 38:1-4
 Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:
“Who is this that obscures my plans
    with words without knowledge?
Brace yourself like a man;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
    Tell me, if you understand.

New International Version (NIV)
                When all of life caves in what does God say?  These days everyone seems to have to say something whether or not they have something to say. Of course people matter, but not every opinion is correct.  All the jumbled voices talking over each other make them almost indistinguishable.

                After he had endured such great pain, Job wanted to talk to God, not to people.  He was ready to go a few rounds with the Almighty and give him a piece of his mind.  Or so he thought.     After all the voices of Job’s friends faded into silence, finally God spoke.  God had heard every word, every flawed and empty word spoken by Job’s friends masquerading as spiritual counselors.  The storm rose, the voice of God spoke out of it and asked Job to answer his questions.

                When God speaks the audience should listen.  Alone, vulnerable in the presence of the omnipotent God, Job heard the one voice that most mattered.  Abraham Heschel explained, “Faith like Job's cannot be shaken because it is the result of having been shaken.”  Has some pain in life shaken you to the core?  Do not be surprised when out of that quaking, shaking and aching comes a stronger faith rooted in undying hope.  God is still talking to us.  Are we listening?
Pray with me:
Father speak to us today.  Out of the storm, or out of the stillness, we plead with you to speak.  We have heard others.  We have rehearsed our own speeches to you.  But what we most need is to hear you.  Speak Lord.  Your servants listen.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
