As we look toward the Fall semester, we want to share some reminders for scholars traveling outside of the US. Please review this information carefully.
Ongoing Travel Restrictions
Travel restrictions throughout the world also continue to expand and change, which may complicate your return to the US, even if you have a valid visa. Please review the list of current restrictions on the US Centers for Disease Control website.
These restrictions apply if you will be physically present in any of the affected areas, even during a flight layover, in the 14 days preceding your arrival in the US.
Even if a country/region is not currently impacted by travel restrictions, that could change -- potentially while you are traveling.
National Interest Exceptions
Scholars impacted by travel restrictions may be eligible for a National Interest Exception (NIE) granted by the local US Embassy/Consulate. You may contact the closest US Embassy or Consulate to begin an exception request.
Granting an NIE is at the discretion of the US Consulate/Embassy. Scholars will need to prove that they are eligible for an NIE according to the Department of State exception criteria.
On July 6, 2021, the US Department of State announced that unless otherwise indicated, new and existing NIEs will be valid for 12 months from the date of approval and for multiple entries, as long as they are used for the purpose under which they were granted.
If you have an approved NIE and are unsure of the validity period, please contact the US Embassy that issued the NIE to confirm.
US Embassy and Consulate Operations Abroad
If you need to obtain a new visa stamp in your passport before returning to the US, you may face delays with the US Embassy or Consulate. Many locations are operating with reduced capacity and significant backlogs of applicants. Please continue to review the website of the consulate or embassy where you intend to apply for your US visa to be aware of any further updates in their services.
Applying as a “third country national” within a country where you do not hold citizenship or legal permanent residence can lead to complications, including cancelled appointments and increased likelihood of administrative processing. If you are considering applying for a visa as a third country national, please contact ogs.scholars@nyu.edu.
Valid Travel Documentation
Please keep in mind that you must have a valid passport in order to re-enter the US. As always, ensure that you have the proper documentation for re-entry to the US. Please review the Travel Information web page for specifics depending on your immigration status.
COVID-19 Testing Requirements to Re-Enter the US
All air passengers travelling to the US are required to get a viral test within 3 days before their flight to the US departs. Travelers are also required to provide written documentation of their lab result to the airline or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19. More details can be found on the CDC website.
As always, please contact ogs.scholars@nyu.edu with any questions. You may also wish to review the Department of State US Visa News page for updates.
Wishing you a safe and pleasant summer,
