Court is now in session. Jesus is the defendant, on trial for claiming to be equal with God the Father. Call your witnesses to the stand.
Jesus is probably the most scrutinized person in human history—and for good reason. He claimed to be the Messiah and God himself. He was either a pitiful nobody or the Sovereign King. But either way, the world was transformed, and here we are following his word! I’m sure I’m not the only one who has had doubts. How can we actually know for sure that Jesus was who he said he was? Is there really good enough evidence? Per Deuteronomy 19:15, the Jewish legal system required two witnesses in order to call something a fact. Jesus had four.
First, he had John the Baptist. John was a prophet of God who knew the truth and told all of Israel about it, and the Jewish leaders even listened to what he had to say for a while. Better yet, Jesus had his own miracles vouching for him. He displayed a power to heal diseases and cast out demons that no one but God himself could have had, and countless people that had been blessed by him were going around with powerful, undeniable stories to tell.
Even better still was the third witness to Jesus’ identity: the Father himself. If any of the Jews had actually been seeking the Father out or listening to his will or recognizing his voice, they would have heard the Ruler of the cosmos telling them to look to his Son. But then the strongest witness Jesus had was one that the Jews already held in the highest regard, one they could not possibly deny: the Scriptures themselves, whose every page had been preparing them for the coming Messiah for thousands of years.
The witnesses have spoken—Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the God. Court adjourned.
Is our evidence enough? There will always be those whose hearts are hard and who will find reasons to disbelieve. But the incredible reality is that we actually have all we need. The testimonies in Scripture, the voice of the Holy Spirit, and the power of his name throughout the world form an unshakable foundation on which our faith is built. Jesus is indeed who he said he is. Recognize the evidence; our faith is rooted in solid truth!
