Here’s the latest scoop on Social Security offsets
Louisiana Congressman Garret Graves and Virginia Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger have successfully engineered a floor vote in the U.S. House for the Social Security Fairness Act.
If this legislation passes, it would repeal two federal provisions—the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP)—that affect many public servce workers, including TRSL members.
How this may affect you! As a TRSL member, you are eligible to receive a lifetime public pension from TRSL upon retirement. If you or your spouse ever worked in the private sector and paid into Social Security, GPO and WEP could reduce or completely eliminate your Social Security benefit because you receive a public pension benefit.
TRSL is closely monitoring this legislation and will keep members updated.
