Where does God live? This week I have looked out over the "Garden of the gods," in Colorado Springs. Does our God live here? What is his address?
Archaeologists and scholars have traveled to Bethel, the place where Jacob dreamed and encountered God. We are not exactly sure of the spot. But what if we were? Would we expect to find a ladder reaching to heaven?
Jesus told Nathanael that he would see angels and descending on Jesus (John 1:51). The earth is the Lord's and all who dwell in it (Psalm 24:1).
For the first time, we see Jacob giving attention to God's presence. Wherever Jacob had stopped for the night, God would have found him. But Jacob came to know both the transcendence and immanence of God. God was above him in the heavens yet perfectly at home here.
This needs to happen to each of us. In worship we encounter the Holy One who is awesome. We meet him and realize he is worthy of our worship. The atheist says, "God is nowhere." But when God finds us, we exclaim with Jacob, "God is now here." We wake up and worship.
