2024 4-H STEM Day Camp

July 23 -25 was 3 days filled with fun STEM activities! On the first day, the youth started by playing some get-to-know-you games! Then, the youth did made straw rockets, and they built popsicle stick catapults. The youth also built contraptions to keep eggs safe from breaking when dropped from a balcony. After lunch, the youth played a game called Save FRED where they used strategic thinking and teamwork to save a gummy worm! After that, youth built volcanoes in groups that exploded later in the week. The next experiment was adding food coloring to water and putting white flowers in the colored water to see which ones would change colors. After that experiment, the youth participated in a build-a-tower challenge with 12” of tape and 7 notecards to build the tallest tower. To end the day, youth built candy DNA strings and each candy represented different parts of DNA.

The second day started off with a few fun questions, and then the youth made their lava lamps using water, oil, food coloring, and Alka Seltzer tablets! After lava lamps youth made crystal rocks by mixing water and borax and adding a pipe cleaner and watching crystals form on the pipe cleaner. Right before lunch, youth got to finish up their egg drop creations, and then they went outside and dropped them off a balcony. Five eggs survived! After Lunch, the youth made homemade bubbles and did a challenge that consisted of marshmallows and toothpicks to see who could build the tallest structure. After the challenge, the youth went outside and shot off film canister rockets! For the last activity of the day, the youth made butter and ate it with crackers!

On the last day, the youth started with a warm-up activity and then made paper airplanes, origami frogs, and helicopters! After that, youth made oobleck which is a non-Newtonian Fluid meaning it is a solid and a liquid! After lunch, youth played with snap circuits, erupted their volcanos, and made bouncy balls! To finish up the day, the youth made ice cream in bags, and we announced our camper of the week: Henry! Henry gave a helpful hand to others and built positive relationships with his peers and adult volunteers.

All the youth had a great time. Make sure to check out the Facebook page for more pictures of the week and other events.
