Hi Neighbor!

When the calendar flips to August, all teachers get "The Look". It is the same look you get when you are in the ocean, a huge wave is on the horizon, and you are intent on riding it to the beach and not letting it flip you every which way only to leave you disoriented, with sand in your britches.  You are excited about the challenge and get psyched to execute your strategies for success.

Teachers get "The Look" because we have a big task ahead of us, we take it very seriously, and there are a lot of moving parts. In my 8 years as a Secondary Education teacher my “job” was to teach English to up to 130 kids, but what was really going on was bigger. It was teaching “Civilization Skills”. It is a huge responsibility with a breathtaking payoff. Though it is very rewarding,  I would like to share with you a few situations that arose in my career, that ALL teachers can relate to, that add another dimension to what we do:

1.    Watching a hunting knife fall out of a student’s coat (during hunting season), and knowing I needed to report him for having a weapon in the school resulting in a 5 day suspension.
2.    Alerting the counselor to alert local child services because, in a conversation, a student told me he was home alone most nights while his parents both worked.
3.    Giving the Heimlich Maneuver to a student who stayed in my class to review for a test during lunch.
4.    Comforting a student who broke down in the hallway because he missed his momwho had died the summer before of cancer.
5.    Responding to a student who in class asked if he could set me up with his single dad.
6.    Having to decide in about 2 seconds how to protect everyone when a fight broke out in the classroom between 2 big boys. (and I was secretly 3 months pregnant to boot!)

So with this in mind, give teachers some words of encouragement, because they are heading back into the waters we call Education.

T&E Care and Amazon Smile
T&E Care is now part of the Amazon Smile Foundation program.   You might have shopped on Amazon.com and seen a notice to "click here" for a portion of your bill to go to a charity of your choice.  This is just like the old Genuardi program that some of you might remember.  You pay $xxx for a product.  0.5% of that price then goes to your designated charity.  If you didn't designate a charity, Amazon would just keep the 0.5%.  Your cost does NOT increase if you designate a c
