Setting the Wheels in Motion: A Message from Gil Preuss
We are only a few days into the new year, and already I find myself wondering how the future will unfold. No doubt, this era will be characterized in part by its division. While there have always been disagreements in our country and within our community, it seems more and more people are less and less willing to have any doubt about their own positions, judging all those with other opinions to be wrong if not unforgivable. At a time when we need to summon compassion and understanding, too many people are choosing to distance themselves from and express indifference to others. These dynamics are also affecting the Jewish community in significant and profound ways. At the same time, however, I see a countervailing trend and tremendous bright spots.

Supporting Our Community During the Federal Government Shutdown
The Jewish Federation is closely monitoring the needs and concerns of our community members as the federal government shutdown continues. We know that thousands of our friends, families, and neighbors in the DMV region are facing an unsettling period of stress, anxiety, and economic instability. Federation and our partners are committed to helping all members of our community access necessary support and resources during this time. For those seeking assistance or stress relief, we have compiled a list of available resources and services that will be updated as local needs emerge and evolve.

Building the World Through Kindness
Living in two cultures can be a gift, especially when we can enjoy the best of both worlds. During the fall season of the Jewish New Year, we are introspective and take a very personal view of “returning” to our better selves. During the secular New Year’s season, perhaps we can take a more global view and see how we can “return” to a better society.
