New Social Media Apps That Kids Are Using

The reviews below come from SmartSocial.com. Embedded into these reviews are videos with additional information.  Many thanks to Lauree Barnes for forwarding this information.
The latest social media app guide we have reviewed is GroupMe (and we don't like

it).

GroupMe App (Owned by Microsoft)
Age: 13+

GroupMe is a messaging app where users can send group or private messages from their computer or phone using WiFi. Since activity from the GroupMe app doesn’t show up on their parents’ phone bill, some students use the app to hide their messaging activity. The app has built-in features that allow users to search the web directly from the app. There is no way to moderate or filter that content.

.
IMVU App
Age: 17+
IMVU is an app where users create custom avatars and use them to chat with strangers in random chats or 3D chat rooms. This app can be used by predators to try and get victims to share their phone number, send photos, and video chat off of the app. Content on IMVU is inappropriate for teens and avatars can be used to simulate explicit activities. Watch our IMVU App video
Gather App
Age: 13+
The Gather app is an event planning app that makes it easy for users to create and share real life events. Invitations can be sent to anyone in a user’s phone contacts, even if they don’t have the app. The app uses a method of spamming that creates false credibility since users think their friends are suggesting they use the app. Watch our Gather App video
tbh App (Owned by Facebook)
Age: 12+
TBH stands for “to be honest”, and the tbh app is a social networking platform where users anonymously answer questions/polls about their classmates. Even though the questions/polls are approved by the developers, tbh can still promote bullying and make it easier for students to become a target.

TICKETS UPDATE: JUST A FEW SEATS LEFT!
We have just a few seats left, so don’t delay in purchasing your ticket!
Please note that team registrations are on a first come, first serve basis and that you do not need to have a complete team of six to register. We will be happy to pair you with a team. See below for additional details and a link to purchase tickets
Trivia Night Fundraiser Ticket Info:
  • No tickets can be sold at the door since teams need to be set up in advance.
  • Each team will be made up of six (6) members, but you can buy any number of tickets.

Click here to buy tickets & register:

http://www.ecsnj.org/trivia-night-tickets/
Creating Teams:
  • You can put together a full team of six members yourself, either buying the tickets in one purchase or, if the tickets are bought separately, utilizing the registration form (or emailing us at friends@ecsnj.org) to list your team’s players.
  • You can also include less than six names, too, and we’ll add others to your team to round it out. Deadline for emailing all team preferences is Monday, November 27.
  • Teams will be created for everyone who buys a ticket. (In other words, you don’t need to come with your own six-member team. We’ll put people together.)
  • We will do our best to accommodate team requests, but it will be first come, first served. So please let your team members know that their spots are not guaranteed until payment is received.

Helping Hands

Elysian Charter School has a long standing tradition of helping families in need.  During this holiday season the ECS staff requests that you consider making a donation towards the purchase of gift cards to help our Elysian families who could use a helping hand to purchase gifts for their children.

If you know of a family in need, or are one yourself, please call me (201)-876-0102, email tara.dublanica@ecsnj.org or leave a note in my mailbox in the main office.   All referrals can be anonymous and are confidential.

Please give your contribution to your child's classroom teacher by 3:00 PM Monday, December 18th,

Thank you in advance for your generosity.  It is very much appreciated
