JIM MOOY ON HAND AS SBCC MUSIC STUDENTS REHEARSE WITH MICHAEL MCDONALD AND PLAY ENTRANCE MUSIC FOR SOLD-OUT LINCOLN CENTER JAZZ ORCHESTRA CONCERT

When Associate Professor of Music, Jim Mooy, arrived at school last Friday, he found Michael McDonald rehearsing with students and faculty for the October 10 benefit concert at the Lobero Theatre, sponsored by the Foundation. Jim urges everyone to get a ticket if you haven't already. According to Jim, "We are going to tear the roof off of the Lobero!" Click here for more information about SBCC Music with Michael McDonald at the Lobero.
Then on Saturday night at the Granada Theatre, Jim was on hand with his camera to catch SBCC music students, Tommy Mooy and Julian Littlehale who had been invited by UCSB Jazz professor, Dr. Jon Nathan, to play small group jazz as entrance music for the sold-out Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra concert. The students were also invited to the after-party where they had an opportunity to meet the artists.
Taking time to reflect,  Jim stated "This kind of community outreach and contact with legendary musicians is the status-quo for SBCC Music, but we are usually too busy lining up the next event to boast. Today I boast... we should all be proud that our community fosters these talented students. SBCC continues to lead the way!"

Clara Oropeza
CLARA OROPEZA, ENGLISH PROFESSOR, WRITES ACADEMIC BOOK
Clara Oropeza, an SBCC English Literature Professor, is self-proclaimed “obsessed” with comparative mythology, literature and author Anaïs Nin’s writing.
In mid-August, she published an academic book titled “Anaïs Nin – A Myth of Her Own,” which analyzes the author’s modernist writings.
Oropeza began writing her dissertation on Nin while she attended Pacifica Graduate Institute and participated in The Pacifica Myth Program. She said she was deeply grateful that she found a program that focused on comparative mythology and literature. After analyzing Nin’s work for a year and a half, she decided to expand her dissertation into her own book. Continue reading...

NATALIE D-NAPOLEON WINS NATIONAL AUSTRALIAN POETRY PRIZE
Natalie D-Napoleon, who joined the Writing Center as a Laboratory Teaching Assistant in 2016, has been awarded the 2018 Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize for her work "First Blood: A Sestina." Selected for the top honor from over 1,000 entries, "First Blood" was inspired by her childhood growing up on a farm in western Australia. It is a poetic memoir using the complex and stunning form of a sestina. Playful and serious at the same time, it creates a positive mythology about a subject that is often taboo: menstruation as a rite of passage marking the end of girlhood. The complete collection of her poems titled “First Blood,” will be published next year by Ginninderra Press, an award-winning independent publisher based in Port Adelaide, South Australia.
