1 Corinthians 6:11
And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
New International Version (NIV)
“I once was lost.”  Were you?  Not only the song, but my soul confirmed that story when I was growing up. My life was a bit like the prayer, “Lord, so far today I have not been grumpy, angry, whiny, or unkind.  I am grateful.  But now I’m about to get out of bed, so I will need some help.”

Paul offers a daunting list of sinful people who will not inherit God’s kingdom.  Then he says, “And some of you used to be like this.”  We must be careful not to make our temptations or past sins our identity.  In Christ all of our sins are forgiven.  Our position in Christ is holiness.  He has made us righteous.  So how do we put that into practice?  How do we practically live like the people we have become in Christ?

Paul’s answer is helpful.  Don’t say, “Everything is permissible for me,” or “I just am the way I am.”  The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us so that we can overcome sin in our lives.  We call this sanctification.  Because God’s holy Spirit lives in us, like Joseph in Potiphar’s house we can run from sin.  Not only do we run from sin but we run to the Savior who gave his life for us.  His power is enough to make us strong when tempted.  Run to him!

Pray with me:
Our Father, we once were lost, but now we are found by you and forgiven.  Empower us to come home to you and to live forgiven.  Set us free from the sins of our past.  Help us to find our whole identity in you.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen!
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
