Proverbs 3:5-7
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
 in all your ways submit to him,
    and he will make your paths straight.[a]
 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
    fear the Lord and shun evil.
New International Version (NIV)
              What does God want us to do?  Do you ever wonder?  As a freshman in college, reading Proverbs in Martin Hall, Solomon’s words came to life.  Without wholehearted trust, we cannot know God’s will.  God’s purposes are often counterintuitive.  This is why we can’t just think our way out of our struggles.  My friend who in a principal at a high school once said to me, “When you see a person who has made really poor choices, remember that their best thinking led them there."  “Lean not on your own understanding . . .  Do not be wise in your own eyes.”
Then we obey God in all that he has shown us to do.  To acknowledge God is not just to nod in his direction.  Instead we submit to him in everything.  Then we receive his promise:  “he will make your paths straight.”  God does not send us a map, but in the Holy Spirit we have a permanently present Guide who leads us into all truth.
We know for certain that God wants us to live with holy reverence for him.  Imagine living life with God.  He is always present.  How does that change our conversations, our thoughts and our behavior?  Wouldn’t we turn from all evil?  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge and wisdom.  This relationship leads us to love God with all that we are.
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for revealing your perfect will to us.  Teach us to trust in your living Word.  Let all of our choices today reveal our unconditional surrender to you.  Teach us to turn toward you and away from sin.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
