Deuteronomy 7:9
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
New International Version (NIV)
In an interview with Woody Allen, the late Dr. Billy Graham responded to the question, “What is the worst sin?”  He explained that all sin separates us from God, so no sin is ok with God.  Then he pointed out that the primary problem is idolatry.  It breaks the very first commandment.

Moses reaffirms the ten commandments in Deuteronomy.  As God addresses his chosen people of Israel he asks them to remember that he alone is God.  So many things in our lives redirect our attention away from God.  Our hearts are idol-making factories.  So our mind’s attention and heart’s affections easily move away from God.

What kind of God is our God?  He is faithful.  God keeps the faith with us.  We can trust him because he is trustworthy.   God will be God regardless of what we do.  In this way his love is not conditional.  He loves us because he embodies love.  Because he first loves us we love him.  How do we show our love for him?  By keeping his commandments.  We don’t earn his love by obeying, but because he loves us we want to obey.

God’s love is eternally enough!  It extends through the generations of time to our descendants thousands of years from now.  Know this:  no matter what happens in our chaotic, sometimes turbulent lives, God’s love for us never changes.  We can’t make him love us more or love us less.  Let us love him first and best today.
Pray with me:
Father, you alone are God.  Thank you for your faithful covenant love.  You remain the same, constant in your love for us your people.  Help us to trust your love and to keep your commandments.  Help us to teach your love to the generations that follow.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
