Hi Neighbor!

While dining with friends last month, someone posed an interesting question to the group: What is your kryptonite food? (You know, that one snack or treat that you simply cannot resist.) One friend said M&Ms, another said nachos and I chimed in with French fries. It’s simple, really; if you put a plate of fries in front of me, I will eat them. Even though I know I’ll regret it two hours later when my stomach feels like it’s at war with itself, French fries get me every time.

The other day I tried to mentally unpack my French fry weakness (clearly I have too much time on my hands). I’m convinced it’s my family’s fault. Every summer growing up, we spent a week at the beach, and all food “rules” went out the window. My stepdad, who has never been one for clean eating in the first place, always seemed to appear out of nowhere with a bucket of fries. They were perfectly crisp, topped with a splash of vinegar and a sprinkle of Old Bay. We’d stroll down the boardwalk, wordlessly passing the bucket back and forth. Maybe it was the salt air that made them taste so good or the thrill of eating junk food before noon. My stepdad loved those fries so much, he would sneak them into restaurants as a sort of BYO appetizer, much to my mother’s horror. (And yes, he might have passed me a few fries under the table #noshame.)

Unfortunately, my children seemed to have inherited my French fry kryptonite, and it’s basically become my husband’s job to keep us under control. But lately he’s developed a weakness for them too! Sounds like a job for Superman.

Bon appetit!

Porch and Parlour

Porch and Parlour typifies the ‘local Bondi’ breakfast scene - gorgeous customers, beautifully presented food, and a chilled out, bohemian ambiance. The cafe specializes in healthy, wholesome choices. Try and grab a seat at the wooden tables outside for a sweeping view of Bondi's glistening waters from its north end. A favorite of many is the green breaky bowl, packed with an antioxidant rich mixture of kale, silver-beet, spinach, coriander, mint, and parsley, along with quinoa, two soft boiled eggs, a quartered avocado, and a slice of lemon.

Trio
Set on the bustling Campbell Parade, Trio has perfected brunch. Elegant touches, like the seamless white tablecloths, glass water jugs stuffed with fresh mint leaves, and polished silverware allow this restaurant to stand out amongst the plethora of eateries along Bondi’s main strip. The menu is brimming with savory and sweet options, and caters to all sorts of eaters. Prime position is out on the sidewalk, which fully lets you take in the panoramic views of Bondi Beach. If you can’t get a seat outside, the floor-length windows still allow the sea breeze to waft in.

Brown Sugar
This small eatery whips up tasty brunch items with a Mediterranean twist. The black and white checkered floors, dark lacquer tables, and chalkboard walls create a contemporary, casual vibe. My top choice from the menu is the black stone eggs: a fluffy English muffin topped with a hearty slice of bacon, broiled tomatoes, and a free-range poached egg. It comes with crispy golden hash brown balls, which knock traditional, bland breakfast potatoes out of the park!"
