Adams named associate provost in new research collaboration initiative

Doug Adams, Daniel F. Flowers Professor and Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will lead a new university initiative to secure mega awards from external sponsors. Doug will serve a two-year, part-time term as an associate provost. Most of his time will continue to be devoted to his role as a faculty member, head of the Laboratory for Systems Integrity and Reliability, and head of the Soldier-Inspired Innovation Incubator for Discovering Research-Based Solutions.

Self-powered wildfire detection plan earns team national runner-up

An undergraduate team took the second spot in a national Jump into STEM challenge to develop holistic solutions that improve the resilience of the built environment. The civil engineering students proposed a self-powered system to detect wildfires, especially in rural communities without access to the networks and resources available in more populated areas.

Three PhD students named Eisenhower Fellows

Three civil engineering Ph.D. students have received Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowships, honors that highlight Vanderbilt’s thriving position as an epicenter of connected cities, transit research, and transportation risk, reliability, and resilience analysis. The students are Madeline Allen, Matthew Nice, and Yanbing Wang. This is the fourth consecutive year Yangbing has been awarded the prestigious fellowship.

George Hornberger retires

George Hornberger, Craig E. Philip Professor of Engineering and university distinguished professor of civil and environmental engineering and earth and environmental sciences, retired June 30. Hornberger was the director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Energy and the Environment. In preparation of Hornberger’s retirement, the Climate, Environment and Energy Futures Working Group was formed to evaluate and plan for the future of energy, environment and climate research and advocacy at Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt chapter advisor, student leaders win 2021 ASCE awards

Lori Troxel, professor of the practice of civil and environmental engineering, has received the 2021 American Society of Civil Engineers’ Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award. Lexi Revis, BE ’21, planning chair of the 2021 ASCE Southeast Student Conference, received a 2021 ASCE Student Leadership Award, and senior Michael Roman is a second-place winner of the ASCE’s 2021 National Daniel W. Mead Student Contest.

Our department has a collaborative environment and encourages inter-disciplinary research. I’ve gotten to use tools from engineering, data science, and business in my research. I’ve also gotten to work on research that will have a real impact on people’s lives - such as integrating renewable generators into the power grid and reducing risk to pedestrians in Tennessee.”Design best-practices suggest a large font size for easy readability both on desktop and mobile devices."

Message from the Chair

It is my absolute pleasure to reach out to you as the brand new chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department! Despite the challenges of the past two years in education, research and life in general, CEE students and faculty continued to thrive uninhibited, and making significant impacts within and outside the university. Our faculty are leading the charge on big initiatives related to climate, transportation, infrastructure and more. Our students are innovating new solutions to tackle the most pressing engineering challenges. This newsletter reports a few of the many accomplishments our students and faculty achieved over the past few months. Thank you for your continued support of the CEE family and I wish you a safe, healthy and productive spring!
