Researcher in spotlight:
Associate Professor Tooran Alizadeh

|
Please introduce yourself
I am an Associate Professor of Urbanism and Infrastructure at the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, and an ARC Future Fellow, investigating the socio-spatial implications of smart city development in India. I also work as the co-convener of the Smart Urbanism Lab at the University of Sydney, the lead investigator on the Infrastructure Governance Incubator funded by the Henry Halloran Research Trust, and the Associate Editor of Telematics and Informatics - an interdisciplinary journal (IF: 8.5) on the social impacts of new technologies. Last but definitely not least, I am an invited member of the Internal Management Group for the John Grill Institute for Project Leadership.

What are your research interests?
My research spans smart urbanism, infrastructure, and Southern urbanism. I have an established track record on the equity implications of telecommunication infrastructure in Australia and beyond. My latest research, however, has expanded well beyond telecommunication infrastructure – advancing an intersectoral approach towards infrastructure governance. A second prominent trajectory focuses on the global trends of smart urbanism from a ‘Southern urban critique’ perspective. I investigate the socio-spatial implications of smart city development in India, putting forward ‘the right to the smart city in the Global South’ framework to produce a normative vision for ‘just smart city’ in ‘contested geographies’.
How does this relate to Project Leadership?
My research deals with some of the most complex infrastructure districts including major urban and regional projects in Australia (e.g., Sydney’s Western Parklands and Northern Rivers). My aim is to develop an integrated infrastructure governance framework for Australian contexts, seeking better alignment between strategic planning and project delivery in terms of planning, funding, and public legitimacy of infrastructure, and foregrounding the context of unceded First Nations Country. Further, my international work focused on the Southern cities and contexts has an explicit infrastructure dimension, unpacking the realities of the scarcity and yet learning from the innovative practices in the margin to inform broader Project Leadership discourse.
How has it been working with the John Grill Institute for Project Leadership?
I find the multidisciplinary nature of the John Grill Institute for Project Leadership inspiring. It enables conversations and collaborations that would have not happened otherwise. Their focus on ‘Project Leadership in a changing world’ fully aligns with my work on ‘infrastructure governance in times of crises’. I highly respect their history and knowledge base, especially in the infrastructure domain. Bringing a diversity of voices from academia and practice, they are here to transform practice for good and I am proud to be on the ride with them, leading the wave of change for environmentally just and socially conscious outcomes.
