Project FOCUS Afterschool Program |
Project FOCUS has been in full effect for the beginning of the school year. We're coming to an end of our first full month of programming. In September we focused on Building Community and Leadership. We started off with a few icebreaker games and getting to know all of the children and giving them a chance to get to know us. We've spent some time with the children teaching them how to be leaders and asking them who is a leader to them. We had our school Principal come in to help share with the children what leadership is and share her role as a leader. As we moved into October we started to focus on STEAM related activities. We introduced our students to Indi the car robot. They are learning basic coding, how to problem solve and use their thinking skills. The students have been using their engineering skills to build boats, using marbles to see who's boat can hold the most marbles. Building bridges with toothpicks and marshmallow to see who's bridge could hold the most weight and stand strong. The students had the opportunity to experiment with volcanos by mixing baking soda and vinegar to watch the volcano erupt. With Halloween being this month we also worked on a ghost and skeleton making. The kids have had a great fun filled month with learning and exploring.

Lights On Afterschool (LOA) is a nationwide event that is celebrated yearly in October to advocate for afterschool programs stating their importance to youth, families and communities. It gives children access to great quality and affordable afterschool programs. The goal for LOA is to allow everyone to see how afterschool programs are keeping kids safe, helping working families and give children the inspiration to learn and gain new skills focusing around STEM. We celebrated our LOA event on October 23 and it was great to see the kids engaging in different stations set up, consisting of virtual reality, slime making, rrt and crafts, games, bracelet making and more.

We made puppets that look like us or someone close to us. It was a fun craft that the children enjoyed.
The children had a fun time working as a team to build the tallest tower with marshmallows and noodles. It was challenging but to see the kids engage and work together as a team was the best part. As we always say "TEAMWORK makes the DREAM work". It's important to teach children to participate in teamwork as it helps build character.
