Dear Friends of the Tang Institute,
Students have returned to campus. So, too, has spring. It’s a different spring this year: there are tents and masks, reminders about physical distancing and regular testing, but we have almost the entire student community together in person for the first time in over a year. It’s been energizing to see dorm communities spending time together and students outside on our many green spaces.
We greet the spring term with hope and optimism here at the Tang Institute. The deep listening and pedagogical research of our teacher coaches led to the creation of a superb guide to hyflex teaching. More than that, this kind of peer-to-peer engagement energized listeners and speakers alike, and we hope to pursue related projects in the future. Our economics students created short videos based upon their work with the Opportunity Atlas; these public-facing assessments will be made available in the coming weeks. Our second iteration of The Workshop is underway, and students have dived into a study of Wikipedia as a lens for reflecting on truth, reliability, narrative, and agency in our exploration of this year’s theme, Democracy and Dissent.
As we have returned to campus, we at the Tang Institute have also joined various campus events organized in solidarity with the Asian and Asian American community. We join them in mourning the loss of life suffered in Georgia earlier this month and we continue to stand with them in unity and support.
Sincerely yours,
Andy Housiaux Currie Family Director, Tang Institute

Whither Wikipedia, Whither Democracy?
The Workshop, Andover's interdisciplinary program for seniors, has kicked off the spring 2021 term with a cohort of 18 students who will collaboratively examine this year's theme, Democracy and Dissent. How do you help students grapple with such complex issues? In this blogpost, Workshop faculty member Corrie Martin shares how Wikipedia is playing an important role.

Hyflex Teaching: A colleague-to-colleague guide
As Phillips Academy welcomes most students back to campus for the spring term, the need for hyflex teaching remains. To support colleagues as they develop their own hyflex courses, the Tang Institute teacher coaching team curated a teaching guide with resources, strategies, and bits of wisdom from Andover faculty members.
