Hopkins Votes. Voters Decide. Be One.

Midterms aren’t just the tests

Midterms are upon us—our students are both looking at exams and at being voters! HopkinsVotes is working to ensure that all students are registered and ready to cast a ballot on or before November 6, 2018! Encourage your student to be sure they have made their plan for voting, which may include the request of an absentee ballot or voting here in Baltimore. Students can learn more about deadlines, how to request voting by mail, or how to get involved in the non-partisan movement for student voting at the HopkinsVotes website or by reaching out to the Center for Social Concern.

Applications open for intersession career treks and courses

The Career Center runs five intersession career treks and one on-campus career course to help students find career options and start to build a network. Most of the career treks include a short course, often led by alumni, and multiple days of company visits. While there is a small cost, scholarships are available to cover the fee. The applications for all of these treks can be found in the Handshake jobs section (students can search for “intersession”), and you can learn about all five treks on the Career Center website.
  • Tech and Entrepreneurship in the Bay Area (due Nov. 2)
  • Media and PR in the Big Apple (due Nov. 16)
  • Seminar in Financial Literacy (due Nov. 16)
  • Biotech and Life Sciences in Boston (due Nov. 28)
  • I have my Public Health Degree, Now What? (due Nov. 30)
The on-campus, one-week career course (Path, Purpose, Passion: Exploring Career Options) will be held January 7–11 and January 22–25. Students will be able to find details about the course on November 1 and apply through the regular intersession application process.

New Public Safety Initiatives website to livestream upcoming public forums

Johns Hopkins has created a new Public Safety Initiatives website to share information, research and other data—as well as gather feedback—as we look at ways to improve safety on and around our campuses in Baltimore.
The site is a great way to take part in the open dialogue that is underway this fall while the university continues to consider how to bolster its security operations. Establishing a university police department remains an option, but the university also is actively looking for and open to different models and solutions.
For parents and families who live outside of the Baltimore area, the website will allow you to remotely take part in discussions via livestreaming during the university’s upcoming public discussions, open forums, and meetings. To participate via livestream, visit the events and livestreaming page of the website when an event is about to start. You will be able to submit questions during the events in real-time via email.
The first discussion took place October 29 and covered the current landscape of university policing. The next event is an open forum on Tuesday, November 13, at 6 p.m. It will take place at the 29th Street Community Center near the Homewood campus. To attend in person, please RSVP via commrelations@jhu.edu. Another forum is scheduled for Monday, November 26, at 6 p.m., at the Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition. To attend that event in person, RSVP via ebca@jhmi.edu. Additional discussions are planned for November and December; dates and times will be announced on the website.
The Public Safety Initiatives website will also include relevant information, materials, and recommendations received at the public gatherings as well as a comment feature to submit feedback, accessible from every page of the site. Please visit the site often for updates and proposals, as well as applicable research and crime data.
Parents and families arriving to register for Family Weekend

Family Weekend recap 2018

Blue Jay Family members came to visit Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood campus for Family Weekend on October 5–7.
The annual tradition provides an opportunity for families of undergraduate students in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering to connect with their student and the larger Hopkins community. Families sat in on classes, toured the campus, met University leaders, learned the history of the Homewood campus, took part in a concert featuring Plain White T’s, and learned about campus resources, among other scheduled activities. They also had a chance to learn more about the city by taking the Community Bus Tour or visiting the Peabody Library. There were a variety of other concerts and plays organized and performed by students.

More updates from Health Services on the Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease

We still continue to see new cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease on the Homewood campus. The measures we are taking include:
  • Cleaning bathrooms of affected students
  • Increased cleaning of common areas
  • A media campaign promoting hand hygiene
  • Hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes given out at the Health Center
  • Advising students to stay home from class and events while sick
  • Giving students “food to go” cards so they don’t have to go to the dining hall while sick
Students need to clean their own rooms and kitchen areas. The virus can survive on hard surfaces for up to two weeks so we are asking everyone to help through hand hygiene and cleaning efforts. We are working with Johns Hopkins Infection Control, the Baltimore City Health Department, and the Maryland State Health Department on this issue and implementing all recommendations given by these authorities. Unfortunately, this virus is very easily transmissible and there is no specific treatment or vaccine. For more information please visit the CDC website.

Thanksgiving with college students: Fantasy versus getting it right

As Thanksgiving approaches, we wanted to share the article below with you that ran in the New York Times on November 15, 2015. We hope you enjoy it.
Here is the fantasy: After months of missing our college kids we eagerly await their return for Thanksgiving. In our dreams we spend cozy hours in the kitchen listening to them recount their experiences and marveling at the newly mature young adult who sits before us. Our kids have looked forward to these days of rest and reunion and are thrilled to come home to the embrace of their families. Food will be abundant and family time sacred.
Here is the reality: One of my college sons gets a ride home for Thanksgiving. He steps just far enough into our home to drop his dirty laundry in a large unkempt pile on the floor. He is barely across the threshold when his high school friends pull into our driveway. Before my husband and I have laid eyes on our son, he shouts “I’ll be back, see you later. It will probably be really late.” and walks back through the door he entered, let’s call it, 45 seconds earlier.

Support student traditions

From the Common Book Read to the Lighting of the Quads and many traditional events in-between, the Hopkins Parents Fund helps to make these much-anticipated events possible. Another of these events was the 10th annual President's Day of Service which was recently held on October 13. Nearly 1,000 Blue Jays and community members volunteered their time to serve at community organizations across Baltimore.

During this year's Giving Tuesday on November 27, 2018, we hope you'll join the many families who will generously support the Hopkins Parent Fund.
