SBCC Foundation's Spring Forward! Gala
Successfully Raised Over $400,000
|
The SBCC Foundation’s 3rd annual Spring Forward! Gala, held outdoors on Sunday, May 22 on the beautiful Great Meadow of SBCC’s West Campus, was a resounding success!
Nearly 300 guests came out to celebrate and support our community’s college as they enjoyed the spectacular venue overlooking the ocean. The event raised over $400,000 to support the work of the SBCC Foundation, which includes the SBCC Promise, scholarships, emergency grants, and other critical needs of the college and its students.
We are grateful to all of the donors, sponsors, alumni, students, staff, faculty, college trustees, volunteers, foundation board members, and friends of SBCC from near and far who joined us and make the Foundation’s work possible.
For more details about the event, see our media release and the Montecito Journal article, SBCC Foundation Springs Forward.
We are delighted to share some photos from the event, taken by our two extraordinary photographers, Nell Campbell and Isaac Hernandez.
Please visit the Spring Forward! Gala website for a complete list of event sponsors and additional supporters.

The SBCC Foundation Welcomes
Four New Board Members
|
Paloma Arnold, Dr. Melanie Eckford-Prossor, Chernor A. Diallo, and Greg Loosvelt
|
The SBCC Foundation recently welcomed four new members to its board of directors: Paloma Arnold, Dr. Melanie Eckford-Prossor, Chernor A. Diallo, and Greg Loosvelt.
The SBCC Foundation board of directors provides strategic leadership to the Foundation. The board is currently composed of 14 community leaders who serve voluntarily and 6 ex officio members who serve by virtue of their leadership positions at the college.
Paloma Arnold serves as the SBCC Vice President of Student Affairs. She previously worked in Student Services at SBCC for over 20 years, most recently as the Dean of Student Affairs, providing oversight for various Student Services departments and programs including EOPS/CARE, CalWORKs, Guardian Scholars, admissions and records, financial aid, academic counseling, the University Transfer Center, and more.
Dr. Melanie Eckford-Prossor is Academic Senate President and former Director of the Honors Program at Santa Barbara City College. She earned her PhD and undergraduate degree in English at UCLA, and has served as a Professor in the English Department at SBCC for 21 years. She is very student-centered, as she works to empower students to realize their highest potential and fulfill their dreams. In her role as Academic Senate President, she takes an equity-forward approach that she hopes serves all faculty—credit and non-credit, adjunct and full time—as well as students, allowing all to flourish as they pursue their educational and life goals.
Chernor A. Diallo is serving as President of the SBCC Associated Student Government (ASG) for 2022-2023, after having served as SBCC Student Trustee for 2021-2022. He was born and raised in Monrovia, Liberia. Chernor lived in Israel for two years where he finished his high school in 2020, studying the international baccalaureate diploma program at Givat Haviva International School. He is a Model United Nations delegate and Executive Director of the International Online Model United Nations-Liberia.
Greg Loosvelt – If you had to sketch the path to becoming a hedge fund manager, it probably would not resemble the winding turns of Greg Loosvelt’s life. A former investment bank merger and acquisition analyst, turnaround specialist, management consultant to the Fortune 50 and crossover hedge fund manager, Loosvelt has degrees in chemistry, law, and management. He has started five ventured-backed companies.

SBCC Foundation Cover Story
in the Montecito Journal
|
The SBCC Foundation was the Montecito Journal's cover story, just days before the Spring Forward! Gala. The article SBCC Forward ran on May 19 and featured interviews with college and Foundation leadership, details about the gala, and photos of SBCC graduates at the 2022 commencement ceremony.
“You know, when I spend time with our students, I never give it a second thought that the world's going to be a better place,” said Dr. Kindred Murillo, SBCC Superintendent / President.
In the article, both Dr. Murillo and Geoff Green, CEO of the SBCC Foundation, stressed that SBCC meets the needs of students, wherever they are in their journey. Green states, “Community colleges are likely the single best tool we have for advancing socio-economics, mobility for creating equity and opportunity, and all the things we know we need, and SBCC happens to be one of the best.”

SBCC Promise Alumni Success Stories
Nicola Perissinotto discovered her passion for sociology at Santa Barbara City College. She took a class titled Social Issues with Dr. Obrien, which turned out to be her favorite class.
“I knew from that point what I wanted to study going forward, and what my career path would be,” said Nicola. Now an undergraduate at UC Santa Cruz, she is majoring in sociology and plans to pursue social work after earning her degree, helping people who are most in need.
“The SBCC Promise made it affordable for me to complete my general education requirements before transferring to UCSC,” said Nicola. “And SBCC was an amazing educational opportunity. It helped me find my passion and provided the tools and resources to pursue my education and a career.” Read more »
In May, Cameron Black was awarded a Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, a prestigious national transfer scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. He enrolled at SBCC as an SBCC Promise student after earning his GED, and maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his four semesters.
Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholars receive comprehensive educational advising to guide them through the process of transitioning to a four-year college and preparing for their careers. Along with financial support, the scholars also receive opportunities for internships, study abroad and graduate school funding, as well as connection to a thriving network of over nearly 3,000 Cooke scholars and alumni.
Cameron majored in both psychology and communications, and was honored to find out that he has been accepted to continue his education at Stanford University.

In Gratitude to Arthur Rupe
and the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation
|
In April, Santa Barbara-based philanthropist Arthur Rupe died at the age of 104, as reported by The Santa Barbara Independent.
A longtime supporter of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Aid (HHA) programs at Santa Barbara City College, the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation has provided more than $2 million dollars in grant support to SBCC over the past couple decades through its Dorothy Rupe Caregiver Program.
Created to sustain and strengthen certified nursing assistant and home health aide training programs, the program began with funding for SBCC's programs before expanding to more than twenty other California community colleges.
SBCC graduates from the CNA and HHA programs go to work in facilities throughout the county, including skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, clinics, assisted living facilities, residential care homes, and private residences.
Thanks to a nomination from Geoff Green, CEO of the SBCC Foundation, Arthur Rupe (and the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation) won the 2015 Bernard Osher Philanthropist of the Year Award from the Network for California Community College Foundations.
As our population ages, the need for frontline caregivers in the healthcare system continues to grow. Thanks to The Dorothy D. Rupe CNA/HHA Program at SBCC, and support provided by the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation, educators and aspiring health care professionals are poised to meet the challenge.
