"Downtown Living doesn’t Stop for Storms" - Westfair Online

When planners promote what is known as transit-oriented development, it is situations like this week’s winter storm they have in mind.
In some Bridgeport neighborhoods, where a growing number of people are able to live a life less dependent on cars, events that severely limit options for everyone else can be more or less shrugged off.
“With the bodegas and small grocers every couple of blocks, it’s easy to bundle up and head down the street if your fridge needs replenishing,” Becca Bryan, who lives in the South End and works downtown, said in an email. “The colder the weather, the cozier the neighborhood becomes.”
With roads out of the city not an option during the height of the storm, most people not living in a dense neighborhood were stuck. The state told people not to drive after 9 p.m. Monday and bus and rail service were suspended. But that didn’t mean downtown was closed.
Adam Wood, chief of staff to Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, said a number of downtown businesses were able to weather the storm.
“You don’t have to own a car, buy gas, move your car and all the rest if you want to live here.”

"Mayor Finch: Bridgeport is safe for families" - Connecticut Post

Violent crime in Connecticut's three big cities fell by nearly 15 percent in 2013 from the year before, according to a new report that also indicates the statewide drop of 10 percent is twice the national average of 5 percent.
A report on criminal justice trends finds that anti-crime programs in Bridgeport, New Haven and Hartford are responsible for half the state's overall cut in violent crime.
Bridgeport alone saw a nearly 21 percent decrease.
"I'm the father of four kids who were born and raised in Bridgeport," the city's mayor, Bill Finch, said in a statement. "And I'm proud to say that our city is safer and stronger today than any other time that I can remember. It's resulting in Bridgeport being a place where more people want to live and work, where more companies want to invest and hire people, and where our strong communities are helping to make for an even stronger economy. We're proud of the progress being made. But much work remains."
Bridgeport officials say the city is cleaning up after the winter storm, and there is still plenty of work to be done to make the streets safe.
Although Bridgeport braced to receive up to 3 feet of snow, the city wound up only getting about 6 inches or so of accumulation.
Officials say that there no were accidents reported on the city's roads. They attribute this to the preparative measures taken, pre-treating the roads and the technology available to DPW crews and others.

"Bridgeport Plows Lend a Hand in New London" - NBC Connecticut

Bridgeport plow drivers headed home Wednesday afternoon after lending a hand more than 60 miles to New London, one of the Connecticut communities hit hardest by the Blizzard of 2015.
The drivers of four large plows maneuvered their equipment along a snowy shoreline through whiteout conditions Tuesday evening. A public facilities foreman joined them on the trek to the state's southeast corner, which received nearly 2 feet of snow.
New London crews were overwhelmed as gusty winds blew snow across freshly plowed streets, creating snow drifts up to 5 feet tall.
Bridgeport trucks worked 15 hours straight to help the city dig out, according to a spokesperson for the Bridgeport mayor's office.
“It was the right thing to do,” Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said in a statement Wednesday. “New London had a moment of need. They really got clobbered and asked for assistance. We received much less snow and already were in cleanup mode here. We were happy to help.”
