Future Ventures Launches $200M Venture Capital Fund Now entering its fifth year, the early-stage venture firm Future Ventures just closed a $200M fund—its third in a row, to invest in frontier technologies across diverse industries including machine intelligence, sustainable mobility, the future of food, computational biology, high-performance computing, aerospace and more. Future Ventures is co-founded by Steve Jurvetson, a veteran VC who has long been close to Elon Musk, and Carnegie Mellon University alumnus Maryanna Saenko.

CMU Spinout Liquid X’s $2.5M Raise Means Hiring
Liquid X manufactures particle-free metallic inks. The company spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2010, after its leaders Richard McCullough and Greg Babe saw a need for more flexible ink products during the additive manufacturing boom in the mid-2000s. Liquid X raised $2.5M in December, to be divided in three tranches over the next two years.

Pitt Ohio Taps Maven Machines for AI-enabled Deployment and Management Platform for 1,700 Trucks

Pitt Ohio, one of the region's largest trucking and transportation companies, has tapped Maven Machines Inc., the makers of a cloud-based and real-time fleet management platform for trucking fleets and operators, to manage the dispatching of 1,700 trucks and 25 service centers.

Kloopify Among Pittsburgh Inno's Ten Startups to Watch in 2023
| |
Kloopify Inc., one of many startups working out of the CMU Swartz Center, has been named among the companies selected to the Pittsburgh Inno's 'Ten Startups to Watch in 2023'. Founded in 2021 by CEO Daniela Osio and Chief Operations Officer and CMU alumnus Ignacio Osio, Kloopify offers a software platform for procurement teams to make sustainable purchasing decisions.
Other CMU founded startups on the list are: Abridge AI, Culturora, Farm to Flame Energy, Inc., MindTrace Technologies and more.

The Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship Hosts the CMU Venture Challenge Demo Day

On Saturday, April 8, the CMU Swartz Center hosted the annual CMU Venture Challenge Demo Day, a startup pitch competition that allows undergraduate student participants from top U.S. universities to pitch their startup ideas and win seed funding, legal services, mentorship and the opportunity to work with partners at Y Combinator, Meyer, Unkovic & Scott LLP, HubSpot, AWS, DRF and Bubble. Organized by the CMU Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Association (UEA), the event—which was held in person and online—included keynote speakers Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures and Lucy Guo, co-founder of Scale AI. The winners of the Demo Day were:
1st place: HydroPhos Solutions (University of New Hampshire) 2nd place: Unsmudgeable (Babson College, Wellesley College) 3rd place: Equolity Bio (UPenn, Yale)

| Applications for the 2023-25 Innovation Scholars Program Close Today!

Applications for the 2023-25 Innovation Scholars program are due by Friday, April 14, 2023 at 11:59 PM; EST. Current second year students in the second semester in ANY school or college at CMU are eligible to apply to this highly selective program.
Applications MUST be fully submitted to be considered. Due to the competitive nature of the program and the limitation of 12 slots available, interviews will be based on the strength of the candidates' application and CMU program diversity.

Apply for the Innovation Commercialization Fellows Program by Monday, May 1!
Carnegie Mellon graduate and Ph.D. students, post doctoral fellows and research assistants currently working with faculty on CMU research-based startups are eligible to apply for the Innovation Commercialization Fellows program. Well-qualified candidates will display a strong interest in driving the startup's commercialization efforts.
The Innovation Commercialization Fellows is a year-long, entrepreneurial program that begins on July 1, 2023. Along with cohort-based educational workshops and expert one-on-one mentoring, Fellows will receive $50K from the Swartz Center—contingent upon a $50K match from another source—to assist with working on their commercialization.

Apply for the Customer Discovery Kickstart Program
The Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship’s Project Olympus Incubator announces the Customer Discovery Kickstart program, designed for early-stage startups to explore the feasibility of their business ideas. There are two four-week cohorts. The first begins on May 10 and the second begins on June 14, 2023. This program helps startup founders to determine product-market fit by connecting them with potential customers and industry stakeholders. CMU students, staff and alumni are eligible to apply.
