2 John 1-3

The elder,
To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth—  because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever:   Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.
New International Version (NIV)
“What is truth?”  In answer to this survey question, musician Bobby Gaynor said, “what people do not want to hear.”  Scientists said we cannot know the truth. A 12-year-old child responded,  “I think truth is what we're all searching for, isn't it? Even though, sometimes, it's more fun to search for it than actually find it.”
The early believers were interested and invested in truth.  In fact, John identified Christians as those who know the abiding, eternal truth.  For the early Christians truth was personal.  Jesus said, “I am the truth.”  To know Jesus is to know the truth.  When we know the truth we are not easily deceived by false prophets with new messages.    In Lord of the Rings, Tolkien has Eomer say to Aragorn:  "You speak the truth, that is plain: the Men of the Mark [that is, the men of Rohan] do not lie, and therefore they are not easily deceived."
People who know the truth make a practice of telling the truth.  This protects us from deception because we know the truth when we see it.  One way to avoid deception by counterfeit currency is to know the actual currency so well that we cannot be fooled.  Jesus is the truth.  He is the one we are all searching for.  And in this case, finding is even better than seeking.
Pray with me:
Father, help us to so focus on Jesus that we will never be fooled by a counterfeit gospel.  Help us to know the truth and so to be set free!  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
