Hebrews 2:17-18
For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
New International Version (NIV)
Charles Stanley often says as he preaches, “Now listen to me.”  So does the writer of Hebrews.  What we believe about Jesus is a matter of life and death.  If we neglect this magnificent salvation, we will miss the purpose of life.   Jesus is greater than the prophets and greater than the angels.
As our world looks for a leader these days, Hebrews reminds us that Jesus is the perfect leader because he alone can lead us to salvation.  He accomplished this through his suffering on the cross so that he could lead many children to glory.  Because Jesus went through suffering, he is a faithful High Priest who is able to help us when we are being tested.
Once my brother and I encountered a young seminary couple at a restaurant.  The young man, David, was wearing a sweatshirt representing his alma mater, Howard Payne University.  We had the chance to bless this young couple, so we did.  Later I received a thank you note from his mentor Don Newbury.  Don said, “I want you to know David’s story.  David battled cancer a few years ago.  I called to check on him and said, ‘How are you doing?’  David said, ‘I’m doing well.  Just playing games with God.’  I said, ‘David, that doesn’t sound like you.  What game are you playing with God?’  David answered, ‘Follow the Leader.  He leads and I follow.’”  What a great game!  Are you playing it, too?
Pray with me:
Father, where you lead me I will follow.  I’ll go with you, with you, all the way home.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
