What does God owe us?
What does God owe us?
June 29, 2016
Romans 11:33-36
Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
    How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
“Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”
“Who has ever given to God,
    that God should repay them?”
For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.
New International Version (NIV)
What does God owe us?  After all, many of us have been faithful to him for a long time.  Doesn’t that put him in our debt in some way?  Jim Denison tells about a church member who complained after a poor diagnosis, “How could God let this happen to me?”
Be wary of a quid pro quo, transactional relationship with God.  Listen to the beauty of Paul’s doxology.   We are not smarter than our omniscient God.  He owes us no explanation.  In fact, he owes us nothing.  We have not put him in our debt, because everything we have to give to him came first from his gracious hand.
Since our whole life comes from God, we will do well today to give our whole lives back to him today.  Our chief purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.
Pray with me:
Father, we marvel at your magnificent mind.  We cannot inform you of anything in our prayer today.  Truly, we have points of view, but you have VIEW.  Thank you for the privilege of giving our lives back to you.  Forgive us when we think that we have put you in our debt.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
