Psalm 91:11-13
For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
New International Version (NIV)
                 The devil knows the Bible.  So when he was tempting Jesus, he took him up to the top of the Temple and said, "Throw yourself down."  Then he quoted these verses from Psalm 91.  The devil was asking Jesus to test God because of the promise that God would protect him.  Jesus answered clearly that he would not put God to the test in this way (Matthew 4:5-7).

                Jesus knows the Bible better than the devil.  While the devil was tempting him, Jesus was fulfilling v. 13, "You will tread on the lion and the cobra . . ."  Jesus was stepping on the snake even as the snake was striking at his heel.  This fulfills God's warning to the serpent that Eve's offspring would wound the serpent's head (Genesis 3:15).

                Years ago I was running with a friend in North Texas.  As we ran, a series of thunderstorms moved.  Lightning lit up the sky and thunder rolled.  I suggested we might head back to the house.  My friend said, "I've always believed God will protect us."  I said, "I've always believed God gave us brains so that we would come in out of the rain."  We trust God to take care of us today but we do not want to put him to the test.  Let us be more wise than the serpent and as innocent as doves!

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for your promise of protection in our lives.  Help us never to put you to the test.  As children of God let us work against the powers of evil in our world today, starting with this prayer and continuing until we lie down to rest tonight.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
I want to invite you to join me in memorizing 52 passages this year from the 2017 set of Fighter Verses.  You can find the Fighter Verses App at the App Store on your phones or via this link  http://fighterverses.com/the-verses/fighter-verses/As we study the Bible this year, let's look at each text and learn what it says about God.
Joyfully,
