Jeremiah 12:5
 “If you have raced with men on foot
    and they have worn you out,
    how can you compete with horses?
If you stumble in safe country,
    how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?

Do we need to get away?  One sure sign is grumbling over the way life is treating us.  What does the Lord think when we endlessly complain?  Jeremiah was the weeping prophet.  Earlier he wished his head were a spring of water and his eyes a fountain of tears (9:1).  Sometimes he just wanted to get away from his own people.

"If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch."  This expression captures the spirit of God's response to moaning and groaning about life.  If people are wearing you out, how will you deal with the greater problems ahead?  In effect, God said, if people are running you ragged, how will you handle the horses?

I know this sounds discouraging.  Why doesn't God pat Jeremiah on the back and tell him it will be ok?  God knows better.  Even Jeremiah's own family members are plotting against him.   Count on this:  God tells us the truth.  Every time.  He is always the safe place to which we can go!
Pray with me:
Father, help us to endure our hardship like discipline.  Train us and strengthen us through our challenges today.  Deliver us from the spirit of complaining.  Teach us to praise you even when things are difficult.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.
