Psalm 37:7-9
Be still before the Lord
    and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
    when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
    do not fret—it leads only to evil.
For those who are evil will be destroyed,
    but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.

New International Version (NIV)
                 Remember Longfellow’s Christmas Carol?  “But in despair I bowed my head.  ‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said.  For hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men.”  David made the same observation.

                 Are we fretful?  Just between us and the Lord, what is making us nervous?   David addressed an age old concern.  Why do the wicked seem to do so well and the people of God seem to struggle.  It is enough to make a person fret.

                These are fretful days for many of us.  Like the prophet Habakkuk we struggle with the reality that God sometimes allows people who are apparently so wicked to punish his own people.  We can’t seem to find an answer.

                David’s words help us.  “Be still before the Lord.”  Fretful folks tend to be agitated.  Instead of watching the wicked prosper, we wait for the Lord.  Our fretting will not stop the wicked nor will it help us.  In the end, the Lord will sort it all out.  So we put our hope in him.  The meek really do inherit the earth.

                Longfellow concluded, “Then pealed the bells more loud and deep, ‘God is not dead, nor doth he sleep.  The wrong shall fail, the right prevail with peace on earth, good will to men.’”

Pray with me:
Father, reveal to us the source of our frustration and fretfulness.  Teach us to put all of our hope and trust in you and not in any mere mortal.  Restore our peace.  Revive us in your hope.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
