Case-Based Discussion Series on Alcohol Use Disorder Series

The Peer Recovery CoE is part of the Collaborative Center for Advancing Health Services (CCAHS) within UMKC’s School of Nursing and Health Studies. CCAHS houses a number of federally funded projects focused on substance use disorder. In the spirit of collaboration, we felt that peers would be interested in these upcoming resources. Our colleagues at the Providers Clinical Support System – Medications for Alcohol Use Disorder (PCSS-MAUD), also part of CCAHS, are hosting a variety of case-based discussions from now until mid-September. Regardless of your education level or discipline, anyone is welcome to join. Below are the sessions that are the PR CoE’s top picks for the populations that you, as peers, serve.
Active learning styles like case-based discussions, particularly in formats similar to ECHO presentations, emphasize a highly efficient approach to learning and problem-solving. These sessions involve simulated cases presented to participants, who actively engage in discussing diagnostic, management, or supportive strategies for the case study. This method promotes deep understanding by encouraging participants to apply knowledge in real-time, fostering critical thinking and decision-making skills. The interactive nature of case-based discussions ensure that learners not only absorb information, but also refine their ability to collaborate and synthesize complex information, making it a robust and effective method for professional development and continuing education.

JULY 24

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! This annual observance, established in 2008, is a time to bring awareness to the unique mental health concerns faced by racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN people and work towards destigmatizing mental illness.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) is focusing on improving mental health outcomes for racial and ethnic minority and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities through its 2024 theme Be the Source for Better Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections. This theme calls on each of us to better understand how the unique environments, cultures, histories, and circumstances (known as social determinants of health, or SDOH) of racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN populations impact their mental health.
About half of all people in the United States will be diagnosed with a mental disorder at some point in their lifetime. And estimates suggest that only half of all people with mental disorders get the treatment they need. Mental disorders affect people of all ages and backgrounds, but racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN populations experience numerous mental health disparities including lower treatment rates for mental disorders like depression and higher rates of attempted suicide.
Visit the National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month 2024 website to find resources, social media messages, graphics, and information on how to Be the Source for Better Health.
