Welcome to the 2024-25 academic year! On behalf of the UChicagoGRAD Parenting Community, I am delighted to announce resources to support and connect you with fellow parents in the UChicago community.
Launching this autumn UChicagoGRAD's Parenting Community will offer weekly enrichment classes and activities for children, monthly family mixers and student-parent write-ins. To find out more details about these programs, please visit our website – where there are also several digital parenting resources – and join either or both of our parent-focused listservs grad.uchicago.edu/life-at-uchicago/family-resources.
And finally, we hope you and your partner will feel free to reach out to me personally for any advice and support for your family. Brooke Carrell, Asst Provost and Exec Director of UChicagoGRAD and I will work on finding answers to your questions and concerns.

| Featured Activity Theme: Monsters!
|
Read: Monsters Don’t Eat Broccoli by Barbara Hicks, If Your Monster Won’t Go to Bed by Denise Vega or There Was an Old Monster by Rebecca & Ed Emberly
Explore: Take your kids Halloween trick-or-treating on Harper Street, between 57th & 59th. The street is closed to cars, as these wonderful neighbors hand out candy and display just-the-right-amount scary decorations.
Create: Mirror-image Paint Monsters. Cut a sheet of cardstock in half, then fold. Unfold and drip various colors of paint in center, then re-fold, smooth and open to see what strange creature emerges. Add legs with markers, or tentacles, feathers or googly eyes with glue.
Watch: If you think your little one won’t be too frightened, enjoy a spooky-themed movie night. Nightmare Before Christmas, Monsters, Inc, and Curse of the Were-Rabbit are especially fun.

Overheard while playing together
A young friend explained that Halloween is a time to be brave by dressing up as what you fear, (some good parenting there!), and she would therefore be lightning.
